Clamp glue faliure
« on: July 17, 2013, 07:50:51 am »
Hi guys

I recently replaced my six clamps as a lot of us windes have recently, but I have had four clamps fail in four working days

I followed the gluing video to the letter, when I have taken the clamps off the glue underneath was like powder,is it possiable with the extreme heat that I have been working in could have caused the clamp glue to fail or was it just a bad batch of glue ?

One of mine fell off too - Gardiners had fitted new clamps for me. The old glue could be rubbed off easily and had very little adhesion - no glue was left on the plastic clamp at all. Made it very easy to clean up though.

my epoxy is still very tacky, i am a bit worried it will glue the sections together.

so for now i have cleaned out all the inside re asembled the pole and left each section partially extended

This is interesting in a 'non-good' way.

This semi-flexible epoxy adhesive is excellent at gluing - we have been using it in the workshop  for many years now on repairs and the only time it has failed on us is when it was not mixed properly - just wouldn't set in this case.

The heat should not have affected it as long as it was not in direct sunlight whilst curing. Drop me an email and I can arrange to get this sorted for you.

I will have to take the blame for this one as I fitted yours for you! Must have been some contamination that was not adequately cleaned off in the preparatory stage.

I changed 3 poles 11 clamps in all
3 clamps have fallen off and I have had to re-do I put it down to not mixing thoroughly I don't suspect anything wrong with the glue itself.

There seem to be quite a few failing. Mine didn't work, yet I mixed for a decent duration and very thoroughly. What is annoying is that Gardiner's won't warranty the clamps if you use glue other than theirs. At least that is what I was told over the phone.

There are actually very few failing at all - We have sold in excess of 600 clamp upgrade kits and the only glue failures I have heard of are the ones posted on here (some of which have already contacted us) - so that is about 1%.

We do not warranty the DIY fitment of these clamps at all so you are free to use whatever glue you want to stick these on with. However we of course have a standard warranty on the structure of clamps themselves as a retail supplied product.

Does the 1% include the one you fitted?   ;)

EDIT: Regarding the warranty, I am merely repeating what I was told by a member of staff. That if you don't use Gardiner's glue, then the clamps aren't warrantied. It stuck in my mind because a new clamp snapped and was replaced (not quite without a quibble as I had to send a photograph and await a decision) and I was told that if I used Araldite then the clamp wasn't warranteed so perhaps there was a communication/training issue.

Hi 8weekly

I will be using this as a training issue for the team - they can be very literal and often follow instructions to the letter (which is good as long as our policies are water-tight). With this I had previously instructed them to only recommend that the clients use this supplied glue. Of course the DIY installation is never warrantied as it is DIY. The material make-up of the clamps is not affected by this.

This 1% does include the ones I fitted and having spoken privately to Dave Willis today I think I have worked out why it failed and probably most of the others. It would appear that on the clamp that failed on Dave the inside surface of the clamp had not been abraded sufficiently so that the glue had not been able to 'key' in properly. It had still lasted about two months in use, but if I had prepared the inside surface better the glue would have had something to lock onto. Lesson to me to be more careful in my preparation  :)

As to the clamp snapping then this would be very strange - usually they would only snap if being used with a section over-extended - in this case it would not be covered under warranty. This is about the only time that clamps snap unless damaged in transit.

I've had 4 clamps come off a couple of slx replacements or poles themselves. The glue they use is not the best shall we say> Have used araldite, left it for 5 mins and proceeded to use poles with no problems. never had problems with clamps after araldite applied but plenty of problems with gardiners two pak glue, don't bother using their glue ever, just throw it straight in the bin! sorry but it's not the best glue!

I upgraded my clamps about 5 weeks ago without problems i used a heavy grade sandpaper to ensure the surfaces were keyed properly .

I like the Gardiners glue as it has a little flex to it i think their is summer rubber compound in it .

I would not use any other glue as in the really cold weather other glues can become brittle and result in the clamp coming off . Mike
