Hi jim,I use a navara and its fantastic.everything is so much easier than using a car or van.its just a case of drop the back down pull out the hose and away you go.I've got a trucktop fitted on mine and a clx 22 fits in the back perfectly.i would never go back to using a van.

Great truck with many D22  known for blowing up engines - D40 shape more reliable. I use a MK 2 IDI Ranger which copes brilliantly with a 400l tank but a good Navara has more power and is direct injection / Common Rail  so should be more economical.

I think the pickup idea for WFP is brilliant - primarily because it's designed to get wet ! You don't need to waterproof anything or be worried about flooding the inside because the interior is isolated. The tank doesn't need to be secured because it can't go anywhere and the driver is protected by two steel bulkheads. My 2002 Ranger is rated at 1.2 tonnes so 500 kg of tools and water is carried with ease. Add in four wheel drive for the Winter weather and the fact you can see out of it for reversing and carry three passengers and I'm sold on it.

Id still be strapping half a ton of water down as I wouldn't want it squishing me under the two bulkheads. Had never thought about a ranger. However thinking about it they would provide a lot of truck for the money.

I did look at a few L200 Classics but was worried by the number of things that could potentially go wrong with them, and looking at the amount that there were on Ebay as Spares or Repairs, indeed what did go wrong. I think Mike has a new shape L200 so I couldn't comment and apparently they seem to be considerably more reliable anyway. The L200, unlike the Ranger, is perceived as cool and a bit classy - therefore older ones seem to be bought by youngsters and hammered down the motorway at 90 mph, which they aren't designed for and are duly murdered - head gasket, head casting, block, front crankshaft pulley etc. The Ranger is just a bit of workhorse and even if you scrape away the leather and chrome on the posh ones are still not really cool like the L200. The D22 went through a spate of blown engines at around the 40,000 mile mark, usually the same issue when number three conrod went through the block and about five grand to fix. Lots of media coverage and the setting up of knackerednavara.com. Problem has been identified and several engineering solutions are offered from about £600-£1000 as preventative medicine. Nissan / Renualt ended up with a bad reputation for customer support as they wriggled out of warranty fixes and blamed the problems on the customer. My tame mechanic hates them as some parts are extremely hard to get hold of it, eg Nissan refusing to sell a rear ABS sensor / wheel bearing  and instead insisting on the purchase of a rear axle for about two grand ! Not uncommon apparently. Ford Ranger stuff easily available from Millners, even though they're made by Mazda and L200 bits probably the same - both well catered for on their site, eg an entire front suspension drop link kit with both links and all anti roll bar bushes was £12 - Cheaper than my Capri !

Mine's a Super Cab with four seats and backward hinging rear doors which gives you nearly 6 feet of loadspace - a double cab is about 5 feet and a regular two door cab about 7.5 feet, so just decide whether you want more payload space or more seating room. One nice touch with the Ranger is that the spec for most is the same, eg they all have electric windows and central locking with the posh models just having a few bolt on bits. You can easily up-spec a poverty spec model like mine and it's cheap to do so. I bought an entire leather trimmed interior for just over £100 and chrome side bars for £50. It's also very good in 4 wheel drive when the going gets tough.

I Have my 400 ltr flat tank strapped down with 2 straps in an X and down the sides i have some solid timbers to act as dunnage .

So my tank is unable to shift forwards , or backwards and straps will prevent any upwards shift so it aint going nowhere .

My L200 has a similar payload to the Ranger most trucks do and they have good quality leaf springs so it will take the weight easy and wont impact to much on fuel consumption . Mike
