Stand pipes
« on: December 31, 2012, 01:13:53 pm »
Are you allowed to just buy one off ebay (think about £40) or are you supposed to just get them off the council / water company

Going to give my local water people a call next week but just wondering what peoples experiances are ?

Most places sell them. My opinion is, why sell them if your not allowed to use them?

I would have thought you can buy them privately, but you can't use them unless you pay the monthly charge.
Welsh Water want a £200 deposit (or there abouts) to use their standpipes.

It all depends where you are as different water firms all differ. I have my own but only ever use it in a private school  ;) Water bylaws apply and they have to have a double non return valve, you should also sanitise it before use ie chlorine or acetic. You also need to know how to turn them off as you can cause problem turning them off too quick. Contact your water firm and they might know about hydrants and they might even direct you to the fire brigade

Not heard of that - I am very close to three water companies so how do they know which companies water I'll be using ? It would be nice to live smack bang in one water area

Having just paid a bill to Supply UK for hydrant use in the Thames Water area and Yorkshire you aren't seeing the true picture.

We have used standpipes in Yorkshire, Supply UK but separate from the Thames account, Supply UK. You cannot hire a hydrant in Yorkshire and use it in the Thames area.

Supply UK in Yorkshire for up to 20m3 pr day was about £40.00 per day (that is including the standpipe hire).

For Supply UK Thames Water account it was about £40.00 per day plus hydrant hire - 3 days came in about £220.00.

It's cheaper long term with UU than with Supply UK. Supply UK are mainly short term hire.

Just spent all day rounding up all my Hilta/Yanmar pressure washers. They're off to the service guys for a deal I'm doing.

Have been doing it in the rain with a suntan. I love the UK!!!

Holiday was probably the best I have been on but as you say back to reality. Prepping up for works starting this Sunday and as I haven't done anything for a month I am itching to get back on with it.

I've just bought 2 Hilta's (Yanmars with gearboxes and 201's) from Cannock. One is fully working just needs cleaning up and servicing, the other needs a starter motor and seals in pump.

£250 the lot!  :)
