  I've wired my pump to the car battery via the lights in the back of the van, I
  was wondering does this have any effect on the car battery or pump.

Car batterys dont sustain the power output like a leisure battery.

So if you do a large job watch your battery dose not go flat, so you cant start your car.

Also pumps can draw off 7amps so you would need some heavy wiring like lighter socket.

I tried wiring mine to the indicator light.

I wondered why my pump was going on, off, on, off

definately need a leisure battery 85 amp/hours or more.

ive got mine wired directly to the van battery and often leave engine running if doing big jobs, although not ideal it prevents the battery going flat.
i also have a leisure battery powering my other pump and reel and have that wired upto my van battery ,so as the engine runs it is being re-charged.
ive been using the leisure battery for about 6 months nearly every day and have not had to charge it up once.
will definately be getting another leisure battery for the other pump as it is a much better set up and wont need to leave engine running for fear of flattening the van battery, ive had to push start it before and it really takes some effort to get a big van rolling with 650ltrs of water in it

You need to be careful as some insurers class this as a modification to your van. And if it caught fire they may not pay up.
