Yes - from about 2000 until they changed the engine for the 1.6hdi - my guess is around 2007.

In 2004 PSA wanted to change the 2.0Hdi for the 1.4hdi they used in the C3 for either the 70 or 90 hp variants. They even sent a mechanic from each of the workshops for training on this engine. They however postponed this until the 1.6 hdi became available 2 years later.

The problem is that the 2.0 produces much more torque than does the 1.6 and even more torque than the 1.4 which is what is most important when discussing diesel engines.
As payload in a van is an important factor, PSA had a problem with the Berlingo/Partner facelift models. EU legislation specified the bonnet height above the engine be raised on all vehicles which increased body weight because of the strengthening that was required to achieve this. (The reason why the bonnet was raised was because it increased pedestrian survival rates in low speed collisions.)
Not only did the 800LX lose 12kgs in payload (788kgs) is also slotted into a higher weight category which means that reduced speed limits applied.

Once the 1.6 hdi was fitted which is a lighter engine, they were able to raise the payload again and slot that van back where normal speed limits apply.

Personally, I would opt for the 2.0 hdi model. If you find a 1.6hdi, please ensure it has a main dealer service history. All sorts of engine issues have been reported caused by poor oil drainage done by 'back street' garages.

Personally I would try to find one with lower mileage.

Why ?
Most Peugeot / Citroen PSA engines & Vehicles last incredibly well. We have a 2.0 hdi 406 in great nick with 208,000 miles and there's one on auto trader with 400,000 +.
All of our XM's (11 of them) have covered 150,000 to 300,000 miles with no real issues.
Don't be scared of the mileage as long as it has good history and no obvious signs of abuse it's not an issue at all.
