Van mounted 4040
« on: September 18, 2012, 06:53:59 pm »
I may have to install my 4040 hf5 in van before winter due to a change in circumstances
I am concerned at having the waste just running out under the van down the street gully until it runs into a drain ( I live in a flat on a sloping road and so there is no nearby drain to run a hose into , only a drain 100 yards away at the bottom of the road )
Apologies if its a silly question, but would this be acceptable ? more worried about general busy bodies and nosey parkers as I live in a heavily populated area, last thing I want is complaints to the water board from jobsworths !
thanks simon

What happens to the water off the flats roof?

well exactly, but in all seriousness I need to know before I go any further with this decision, legally am I doing anything wrong ?
Colin purewater, did the water board investigate you, fine you, prevent you from working this way ?
or was it just a neighbour with a grudge trying to cause trouble for you ?

If its a bad idea then I need to look at alternatives.

Sorry Spruce I think I get what you are saying now ! why dont I just use the drain that the downpipe off my flats roof goes to ?

The drain is outside the door of my neighbours basement flat.
He has OCD with regards to anything involving water ! in fact its on his request that I move my ro to the van instead of my ground floor hallway where its connected to a tap when in use, we are then going to go 50/50 on having an outside tap installed to satisfy his concerns that the hoselock connector could not pop off the tap and cause a flood to his flat.
Although this sounds a bit ott I have caused problems with leaks in the past but was a long time ago now when I first started with a merlin and bad connectors and more recently a leaking washer on the stop cock (not really related to my wc business)

So the short of it is, I dont think he'll go for a hose being put in the drain right outside his front door, hence asking if its acceptable for the waste to run down the street until gravity guides it back into the drain.

Simon ;)

Although I can't see you breaking any laws, I bet the council won't be too charmed. Everytime someone sees water running down the road they will report it as a leak and the council will be obliged to send a contractor out to investigate, even if they know about you already. I wouldn't do that if I were you - opening a can of worms, water meters, running a business from home etc. etc.

Isn't there another drain, either storm water or sewerage somewhere else? It doesn't have to be close by. Is it possible to rig up a your r/o on a stand and rig it up in either in the bath or kitchen and just couple it up to fill the van. There was someone on here that ran a small plastic pipe through a hole in the wall, down a couple of floors to his van below. You may be able to get a plumber to fix a permanent pipe on the outside of the wall if the owners of the flats agree. I know of a window cleaner who prepares water at the back on his terrace house and runs the pipe under the house to the front, where he fills his van.

I run my waste to the back of the house. The easiest drain to get to is in the front, but prefer to keep the knowledge of waste water amounts away from the neighbours.

I live in an end terrace and I do a similar thing, don't even use a hose just let it flow grommets the port on outside of van .
No complaints  :)

I think you also have to be careful of creating a slip hazard in winter

Thanks for trying to advise on a solution Spruce,
The thing is I already have the best solution, unfortunately my neighbour  continues to give himself sleepless nights worrying needlessly. I already have as you suggested the waste fed through my rear wall and into a downpipe and the pure goes under my floorboards and through my front window frame down to street level where I join it up to the van by a short length of hose when I need to fill.
His issue seems to be with the hose connection that feeds the ro from a mains tap in a communal hallway, this cannot be permanently connected (and there is no other permanent means of mains feed within my flat because the mains supply is hidden behind walls )
I'm sure he is just trying to be helpful by suggesting we install an outside tap so my equipment can be van mounted and tbh I'd prefer that as I am so short on space, but without an available drain for the waste I guess its a no go.
Thanks for the help though, Simon.

Colin purewater, if you are still reading this thread I'd be interested to know what happened once you were reported to the water board ?

It doesn't take that long to fill a tank with a 4040 R/O. If you started to process water when you get home, you will be finished long before he goes to bed, so he shouldn't have a sleepless night worrying about the water being left on all night.

I'm sure that all the pipes wouldn't be in the wall. The pipes feeding the washing machine will be easily accessable as will the cold water tap feeding the bath and basin taps.
