40/40 again
« on: May 25, 2012, 08:23:55 am »
Hi

All of those who have 40/40 R/Os, please can you tell me why some are supplied with 10 prefilters with the option to upgrade to 20" filters. My first inclination is that the 10" filters are too small, especially the carbon block filter, but are they?

Also would a clear bowl not be better to see when the sediment filter needs changing?

As I've mentioned earlier, I need to upgrade my 450GPD r/o (although with the warmer weather it's producing water quicker). We don't need to produce more water per week but we just need to produce it more quickly from time to time. My 10" clear sediment filter bowl is idea for me being able to keep an eye on its state without having to take it apart. (There have been odd times when the water has been particularily dirty and I've had to replace the filter within a month, but mostly change them every 3/4 months.)

Thanks

I have used both 10 and 20" prefilters on my 4040, i used to change the 10 inch ones every month as they were a lot cheaper to buy. from win techs, the 20inch you dont need to change as often but they are alot more expensive and more than double the price.
I am seriously considering chnaging back to 10" ones I change mine when the fill time starts to drop off.

if you like to change 3 monthly then I would go with the 10" ones purely down to the cost element.

It only makes a difference to the frequency you have to replace them.

Thanks chaps.

I realised that the 10" sediment would need to be replaced more often, (probably as frequently as I do it now) but I was also concerned that the carbon block would need a bigger element to protect against chlorine damage to the r/o membranes.

20" filters just last twice as long that's all  :)

I use the 10 inch pre filters. I got some advice from Nick at Vyair that seemed to make perfect sense to me, so this is now what i do..........
don't bother with a sediment filter. Just use two carbon blocks. They're good for 5 micron the same as a sediment filter and two offers more chlorine protection. We change our every six to eight weeks because you can never see when a filter is full of chlorine.

I have been using carbon and sediment for years with the same 4040, the colour change in the white one is a good indicator of when they need changing.

depends on the amount of crap in the water mate, I have 20's on mine and not changed them for ages and I fill at least 5 times the amount you do, they have slowed down do due a change now

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your input on this one. Whilst I didn't have a problem with using a smaller sediment filter, I was worried that as 10" carbon filter wouldn't have a big enough surface area to remove the chlorine at those higher production rates.
