In The Sun Today
« on: May 23, 2012, 08:59:01 am »
What are your precautions for working in the sun? I have a floppy hat, long sleeve shirt and shorts (sun screen on of course).

It is an health and safety issue of course  ;D

Hey people let's be careful out there (Hill Street Blues!)

Feel free to be serious, abusive, sarcastic, sardonic or frivolous in your replies ... I know some ofyou can't resist!

Being of a Japanese genetic background, I am further developed along the evolutionary path than you horizontal-eyed-rice-pudding eaters, and therefore better suited to working in the sun.

I'm not freckled or ginger, unlike most of you hairy baboons, so cope pretty well.

I do wear sun screen on exposed body parts, and sun glasses to protect my beautiful slanty eyes though.

My great uncle worked in the Merchant Navy on Shell Tankers for over 50 years. Having travelled the entire world for that time his opinion on the UK was that if you can survive the climate here you can survive anywhere!

I refuse to do it. I went out at 8 and I have just came back in for the day, too hot for me. I actually prefer the grey day's or broken cloud when working.

I remember suffering with the heat when I was unfit, but being slightly fitter, it doesn't feel as bad.

I'm sure fitness has a role to play with dealing with hot temperatures; I seem to remember being told prior to Gulf War 1 that the fitter we were, the quicker we would acclimatise to the heat.

My maternal Grandmother comes from a big 'n' famous Samurai clan, but her husband - my Grandad - was of peasant farmer stock.  And my father was a Geordie; so I'm a Geordie-Jap; the ultimate creation in evolution.  I've got the stunningly good looks and extremely high intelligence from my Japanese DNA and the well developed sense of humour, sharp wit, and huge beer drinking capability of the Geordies.  Well nearly, anyway, I'm tee-total now, 'cos I liked it too much.

But if you removed all those good qualities I have, you'd end up with a Welsh person.

Is that true? I've seen them in The Valley of the Kings, all kitted out to protect themselves from the Sun.
Long sleeves, gloves, umbrellas and all that. (I was dying to do the old joke 'why the umbrella? It's not going to rain  :P). More so than anyone else.
Saying that, it was very, very hot but it didn't bother me, as I'm very dark anyway.
It might have just been common sense but the Japanese seemed more protected than anyone else.

waye aye samurai!  ;D

They used to call me "Whey-Aye-Banzai" in the army, that 'n' Tojo, and the 'Jap sniper' (I was a Bisley shot), and Gook, and Missing Link, and Split Link; even Kitchen Sink once.

Bunch of gimps in the army!  ;D
