To those that use standpipes. im finding more and more smaller older style hydrants. the key i have only opens the newer style bigger type of key, if that makes sense. the older style o es are smaller and my keybar just free spins but i cant find any keybars with a smaller end.

any ideas?

Do you mean the tapered adaptor in missing and only the 1" square remains ? Find one with it on, undo the m8 13mm bolt and take one of your own, or use a socket

No mate. i have a key with a tapered end but on some hydrants its too big to open it. it just free spins iver the square tap. ive tried a socket but most of the hydrants are pretty low down. was just wondered if there was maybe a better style key that will fit both? I was thinking about buying a stopcock key cause they are for the smaller square tapheads.

 Yes thats what I'm saying the square ones just have the square to taper adaptor missing. I have one on my van

have a look at the hydrants thaty you have used in the past that do work, the adaptor will be on it I bet, just nick it off the top as bdcs says

Ahhh so the actual hydrant itself has an adapter on it? Are they easy to get off?

Yep they slip on & off, I got my from a water board engineer he said they are called "Nollies"

ye can tell scottish water keys as they have a number on them and can be hired out

How the hell do you get to use hydrants. We do restoration work for a major water company and they won't even let us use one.

You need to pay mate. contact your local water supplier and ask to apply for a licence.

Who do you do work for because when I cannot use a store supply I just ring Thames up and give them £150.00 for up to ten cube per day, for a months use!!
