Is it important to keep van warm
« on: February 12, 2012, 05:58:15 pm »
.... To keep your van warm even when not using it??
I haven't been using van since fri morning-it's got my RO, filters etc.. In it
Went out this afternoon to fill up and most things were frozen - its taken an age to defrost!
Will I cause damage by letting it freeze?
Do you guys keep your stuff warm when nit in use and it's freezing temps or will it be ok?
Ta

my fear is the ro gets frozen cause it can damage the membrane so i heat mine every night  . probably over cautious but if the temp is forecast for freezing the heaters in the van .ive got quilts over my filter system as well

Ice can destroy filters, housings, membranes, pumps, connectors, heaters,.. even the spindle on your reel can split from freezing. It could be an expensive mistake to let it all freeze,...

So even when not in use for any period, the morale is keep everything warm?
I've got a stainless steel housing and keep everything lagged and blanketed - hopefully I've been lucky - I filled this afternoon after defrosting and system seemed ok

Definitely don't let it freeze, can cause all sorts of problems.

also (something I didn't realise) is its not good for the RO membrane to dry out, as in left more than week or two.....

last Jan I went new Zealand for 5 weeks, drained and dismantled system and stored in house. only after did I find out can damage filters this way. I got lucky, seemed to work just as good (nearly).

apparently should be filled with water, and the waste valve closed to keep water in...... so it's kept wet. just make sure not gonna freeze!

I'm sure a lot didn't know this, I'm sure you'd get away with it.....but just so u know.

yes just taken heater out, wont be needing that for this week, nice to see supposed to be about 8 degrees daytime and above freezing night time.

On the face of it, whats a couple of pound a night, if that, the heater doesnt need to be up high, just enough to keep the frost off it.  And with the amount we are all earning its a fly in the ointment  ;) ;D

keep your van warm over night it is always best. If your ro has frozen then it may not neccessarily be damaged as its running ice through it that causes the problem, so just let it defrost before your start filling .  8)
