Over wet carpet ?
« on: February 02, 2012, 06:03:59 pm »
Going to see a customer on Saturday, she had her carpets cleaned before Christmas by a  carpet cleaner with a Vax ! he used loads of water ( her words) and the carpet took 2 days to dry, she now has a horrible smell, and is using a can of air freshener every couple of days ,

I reckon the underlay is still damp / wet , and this is the problem, would you agree ?

I am not going to touch this carpet as its the original CCs problem , I am going to advise , and quote on HSL + bedrooms cleaning  with Host sponges and M power + Freestyle machine.

Paul,

Get a moisture detector (try caravan accessory suppliers).

I've had a similar situation (following a "vaxing") where the carpet felt dry on top but the underlay was sodden. I was amazed how far the moisture had spread.

do you have the equipment, training and knowledge to do the tests and offer constructive advice or would she be just as well going back to the guy with the vax?
If you are going to be critical of somebodyelses work I would make sure you can back your case.

Treat as a flooded carpet, throw underlay away,(or spray underlay with anti-microbial), spray under carpet with a anti -microbial sucn as microsan
dry with turbo dryers. Refit carpet with new or treated underlay, re-clean and spray with microsan.

Doubt if this joker has insurance or even treatment risk cover.  ::)

As I said I have no intention of touching this carpet in any way shape or form, its the original CCs problem, not mine.

Jim, "frying pan ....fire" quip, are you inferring that I do not know what I am doing ?  As its a very bold thing to say when you know nothing  about me , my company  my training or my experience.

The carpet has probably had it if it's been lying on top of damp underlay that long. Mildew has almost certainly set in resulting in the odour producing bacteria.
Try as we do to get this across to customers, that they are taking a chance when dealing with the cheapest (asuming that's the case) many still are getting caught out - their own fault really.

went to customer on Saturday, carpet very smelly ! advised she gets  the original CC back , and claim on his insurance, if he has got any, or cut her losses and use her own insurance and buy a new carpet/underlay.

Picked up the HSL and Bathroom , for which I will use my Airflex machine as its really dirty.

Jim , still waiting for a reply re you "Frying pan.......fire" remark.

Sorry, missed this.  I meant: Dirty carpet... ruined carpet!

Bet she thought it was a great deal with this cheapy guy (hope he was cheap anyway!).  This is the kind of thing you just can't put in customers' minds when you quote for work, some have to find out the hard way.
