so i'm self employed and obviously working for myself means if i dont work then the jobs dont get done but where all entitled to a holiday away with the young un sometime? i just wondered what some of you people do for holidays? how many times you go away etc and for how long or when? i work by myself for myself as im sure alot of people do.. i could get someone else in to work but is it really a good idea drafting someone in and sending them to your custys houses? i know i wouldnt like some randomer turning up at my house! do you guys just tell your custys in advance and there ok with it?

ive never had an holiday!  no time and cant afford one anyway

because we only work part of the week on windows, it enables us to do half of the week we are away on holiday before the holiday, and half after. thereby minimising earnings lost and not getting behind with it all.

we went to new Zealand for 5 weeks this time last year. and got another window cleaning friend to cover for me, I took 15 percent if remember. but he's a Jehovah's witness, so I knew I could trust him with my customers!

a lot of window cleaners just go away for a week at a time and the customers generally dont notice.sometimes ive told them ill be late next time due to holidays if its for 2 weeks.

im aiming for 6 weeks of holidays a year over the next few years.


booking holidays during late july and the month of august is good as a lot of customers are away then as well.

im looking at going away to new zealand and australia for a month in january in a few years!!

If you were ill (hope you won't be) and unable to work for 2 weeks what would you do then?

I have at least 5 weeks off a year, trying for more this year.

At christmas I have 2, break up on christmas eve and go back on the 2nd week of january, none of the customers notice because all the customers who fall in between christmas and new year are brought forward to christmas week.

and when I want other holiday, normally 1 week at a time, I pull forward half of that weeks work forward and push the other half forward by 1 week, none of the customers object and I still get 12 cleans out of every customer per year.

For the last year I have been consentrating on expanding the business, it should be where I want it hopefully within the next 12 to 18 months, then the holidays will strech into months instead of weeks.

I also had an operation on my foot in July and I was in plaster for 3 months, which didn't stop me from working, but the surgeon barred me from flying because of blood clots.

India on Friday for 2.5 weeks comming back via Dubai,its been wifes pet dream for years and now were going .
I tell my customers Im may be a bit late cos Im on holiday and they have always been fine.

I went Austrailia in November for 2 weeks, left window round with employee.

Las Vagas this year, again, employee will take care of work.

lets face it guys we all deserve a break from time to time.window cleaning is hard work on the body so i word of warning to all you workaholics.it WILL catch up with you eventually with strains and stress on your body resulting in time off work anyway.

my motto is work hard but know when to take a break and enjoy the fruits of your labour!

I do have a little bit of commercial work that might need cover while I'm away but never domestics.  They just get left until I'm back.  The commercials are just shop fronts so I get a local trad guy to do them.  I've covered for him too.  Not an issue.  I've known him since we were kids and he's sound.
