I have a bit of a broblem i have a 650 litre tank in the back of my long wheel based Transit and i am a bit baffled about how to secure it .I know it is a bit naughty to drive about with it unsecured and some would say should have got a proffesional system but they are not the answers i am after.

Can i buy a cage for it ?

Where are the best securing points?

and when it is fitted where can i get an engineers report ?

Hi dave,

I bought a roofrack for my van on saturday.THe firm built it themselves and fitted it.I asked and showed pics of water tanks.

They said they could easily build a cage and fit it securely. and galvanize it.

Check local fabricators or Roof rack firms in your neck of the woods.

ive seen people fit metal bars / plates under the van floor, then use those massive ratchet straps (the lorry type, 5 tonnes) to tie them down and onto the plates

i am sure ive seen a company online that does it

Was the van boarded out on the floor and was there a safety cage behind the seats??

I helped a friend build a frame out of angle iron to keep his Snap On tool boxes from moving about in his Transit. Full of tools these were very heavy.
We welded some securing brackets we made to the floor and secured it that way.

I think the angle iron cost around £10 for a 20 foot length.

He got it checked but i can't remember where, plus i'm not in touch with him anymore as he moved.

The floor is boarded out but i will be taking it out soon,there is a cage behind the drivers seat but i dont think that is adequate protection .
I would prefer to buy something and get it installed

I see what you saying about tank but i wasn't meaning using safety guard behind seats. If you decide to do it yourself i got welding gear.

I have built storage containers at a place i used to work to hold 5 - 6 oil drums out of scrap material and as far as i know they had them tested and they passed as we were using them.
I made a trailer out of scrap material just to transport a 5 ton injection moulding tool about.

As soon as i can sort a van and system out for myself i will be fitting it out myself.

If you are going to get the wing done have a word with them and see if they can do it for you whilst it's in for repair so the van not off the road again.

Hi Dave,

Try  http://www.cleantech.co.uk   I am sure this is where I purchased the strapping system for the last van I set up. It was very expensive though, about £175, for two 10 ton straps, two angled pieces of steel and 8 bolts and a few other bits.

I would also try your local fabricators. Explain to them what you want and they should be able to make is for you. Also visit your local car/ van body shop, have them fit the tank for you and also to certify their work.

Is it a baffled tank Dave? If so then surely it will need less securing. (Pun and serious question included! )
