Think I got my first job.
« on: September 16, 2011, 10:15:47 pm »
Hi,
I was going to post this in general, but seeing as I asked for advice yesterday and no replies so far I thought I would tell you guys!! Sorry but somebodys got to listen to my news!!
I went to a site visit today for myself, I have done hundreds as an employee but have spent ages working towards working for myself.
I went, took samples of chems, insurances, walked the building with the contact and she was so pleased they have asked me to visit 2 other premises over the weekend because they want me to start asap.
Its general cleaning, to include periodic carpets and windows totaling 27 hrs a week and a maintenance side at an hourly rate which I have set and agreed with the client. Likely to be 5-10 hours a week ish and no bother to me, am a multi trader too.
There is no tupe implications as they are new offices and I will be cleaning myself, at least while I work on other work.
This means the difference between me being able to afford to leave my full time job.( I cant stress enough how good that feels) On top of that I went to see a lady yesterday who is getting big in my area on domestic but has no one to pass the cookers, end of tenancy and carpets onto, she wants to pass onto me. She has agreed to work around my hours at my general job.
I have spent years practising for this and it seems to be coming together.

Off to grab a cold beer, am so excited.
Now please await dozens of questions about being self employed!!

Sorry but someone had to cop it and my mrs has fallen asleep!!

Well done, now the hard work starts, but working for yourself just gives you a certain satisfaction.  Keep it up, but remember there will be lots of lows as well as highs.

Depending on where you want to take your business, hold onto the euphoric feeling you are currently feeling and look for it again, and again and again.

It is fantastic to be able to create something from nothing. It is even better when it becomes your livelihood, it becomes phenomenal when it changes your lifestyle and gives you financial stability/security.

Whatever you do never compromise on end product, keep quality as the number one priority and realise that you need a short term, medium term and long term vision.

I worked in a warehouse twelve years ago and could never imagine that my life would be what it is today!!

Good luck

Rob ;D

Now bricking it!! Got to hand my notice in on Monday!!

And van shopping, like now.

Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the kind replies, I have so much energy for this now, looking forward to it.

Hi,
I have a land rover which will be perfect for what I am going to do, I can fit everything I want in it and it will get me wherever I am going in the snow.

Now its mine, its almost ready for mot, few things left to do, and I am going to order the bits tomorrow.
Now is this tax allowable?
Can I claim the costs off my tax bill?

Or does this only apply if I go out and buy a van?

Many thanks

Paul

Get an Accountant!

Doesn't have to cost loads - I do all my own books but my accountant does my tax return at the end of the year. Last year was £150 as its apartnership and they were full accounts, the year before it was only about £70!! (was sole trader then).

The best thing is that she's always there to answer any questions -without charging me!! and she has saved me loads of money because she knows all the tricks re what you can claim as expences and the best way to work it all out.

I am quite good at doing my own account and knowing what I can and can't claim, but honestly she has saved me tonns of money, and given me some much needed peace of mind when it comes to the dreaded tax return!  -she's worth her weight  in gold!

A car is an asset to your biz, so you can only claim the depreiciation on it, and only the proportion of it thats used for your biz (not personal use) Can also claim any other cost including tax, mot, fuel and any maintenance costs (again biz use proportion) And you have to prove your biz use by recording your miles.

I think if you had a van or a new car with really low emissions you can claim 100% of the depreciation in your first year, but they may have changed that, they change their minds every 5 mins!!
This is what I think ....... Not unusual for me to be wrong though!!!

Oh I will do!!!
Just up against it that's all, what a weekend!

I shall keep the receipts for the bits I am going to buy, I always keep mileage records ( part of being an employee in cleaning), I shall speak to some family members who are self employed, find out who they use.

Am kind of employed and self employed at the same time up until tomorrow!!

Many thanks
