Evening all.

I'm thinking about changing my hoses from the 12.5mm that we've always used to either 6mm or 8mm.

I've just looked through the GArdiner website and they have 6mm at £45 for 100m, 8mm at £57 for 100m and 8mm hazard yellow at £24.95 for 100m.

Now, having always used 50m reels of the big stuff which option would be best; and how come the hazard yellow hose is so much cheaper?

Last question, will I be able to fit 100m of the smaller stuff on to my blue hosereel; can't remember the make but everyone seems to sell them

u should get 100m of 6 mm or pole hose,  the pole hose gardiners sells is crap, its too flimsy,

If that's the case where's the best place to buy it?

Maybe I'll just pop up to Varitech.

Also; a bit thick perhaps, but can I buy something to attach the smaller hose to the hose reel; considering it's meant for 12.5mm hoses?

Ionic do a orange hose 8mm for around £60 per 100m and it fits nicely to a 50m reel. BONUS this hose is for hot water systems so will last much longer than you would exoect and mine has lost its shape in 11 months. Never had that before.

The 6mm ID is Microbore and is the smallest hose reel hose.
The 8mm ID is Minibore and has a greater flow rate than the Microbore.
The 8mm OD Hazard yellow is pole hose and would not be suitable for using on the reel.

When Jed I Night says it is **** I think he is saying that for his personal preference he does not like our current pole hose that we fit to the poles (Hazard Yellow 8mm OD). The Microbore and Minibore are very different hoses due to the reinforcing and I do not think he is including these in his eloquent assessment  

You would be able to fit 100m of either the Microbore or the Minibore onto your standard hose reel. I would recommend the 8mm ID if you have been used to the higher flow rate of 12.5mm ID. I use the Microbore though as it is lighter and more compact.

Of course you can purchase similar (not quite the same though) hoses from many other suppliers in the industry.

i use the 8mm hose from gardiners, great stuff, i have a 50m and a 100m reel in the back of my van, i used to have 6mm but the pressure was crap so i now have that as a emergency back up hose

i was refering to the pole hose,  the bright yellow one, in my opnion it is to flimsy,   as when i stand on it it cuts off teh flow, i never had this with other other pole hoses gardiners supplied,  when i fit it in my john guest connectors it  tends to leak as wont sit properly

 i have never bought any other hose from gardners 6mm or 8mm, but have seen them and know people who use them and they have never had any problems

I have 100m of Gardiners 8mm minibore on a 60m Hozelock reel. Brilliant hose, smaller OD than a lot of other 8mm hose & it's also memory free-meaning it doesn't spring off the reel & it just moulds itself to however it's reeled back in as well as laying flat on the floor when pulled out. Top stuff.

I also do not like it stopping when I stand on it! I have another formulation coming that will offer a more rigid hose for those that prefer it (like me). Although a lot of clients love the current formulation, so we will still be stocking it as well.
It also sounds like you need some of the John Guest hose to barb adapters - I fit these into this softer hose and it allows it to make a strong and leak free connections to all John Guest 8mm connectors.

A lot of our clients much prefer the new hose due to its softer non-memory formula - on the other hand some do not which is why from a few weeks time there will be a choice. When you see this choice being offered on the website on the pole selection then give us a call and we can send you a replacement length of the different type for free. All future clients will be able to specify what they want.

I would not recommend pole hose on a reel as it is non-reinforced and would not in my opinion last very well due to the abrasion it would receive. However I do know of clients who do use 100m of pole type hose for this purpose. I do not think our current soft pole hose would be suitable as it would shut off too easily when pulled hard around a tight corner.

If you want to stay with hozelock type connectors then all you need is two of these (one for each end of hose). Otherwise you'll just need one for the inside of the reel. These barbs allow you fit a small piece of normal 1/2" hose to the end of the minibore which in-turn allows the normal 1/2" connection.

I personally use hozelock "type" connectors.

i use 6mm microbore.much more managable and i find the pressure fine.i use 70m on my reel.i use the hose from gardiners.its seems ok but i cant see it lasting.it bubbled up and i had to cut 30m off after a month or so of using it.all is fine with it now though.100m was too much on my reel for me anyway.

my mate as just taken delivery of 2x 100 mtr rolls as hes seen how easy it is when using the pole hose , so will these 2 x rolls be the softer type of hose ?

If you are using these type of reels:



You can get a small 1/8" brass fitting that screws onto the inside of the reel outlet (the curved brass fitting on the centre of the reel). This fitting then has an 8mm barb which allows you to fit the Minibore hose to (you can get them with 6mm barbs as well). So what you need is a brass 1/8" male screw to 8mm barb fitting.

I've been using 90 mtrs of pole hose from the first day i started with wfp around 5 yrs ago i was using the clear hose for a good few years , then changed over to the yellow hazard pole hose about 12 months ago and im still using the same hose now and its never been a problem , there's been buses run over it a bin wagon pulled up on top of it no end of cars running over it , its been pulled round corners and its still ok .

I also know of others who manage to use pole hose on their reel and if it works why not? However as a supplier I cannot recommend using it because for the majority it would not be tough enough and we would end up with clients ringing up saying the hose is not suitable. For this type of application a reinforced hose is better to recommend.

If your mate has just taken delivery of this hose it will be the latest more pliable, zero-memory formulation.
