Don't Cha Hate It When That happens?
« on: August 12, 2011, 11:01:44 pm »
Went to price a job the other day, a care day centre, and whilst I was there I sold them a full UPVC clean of a big conservatory and all gutters ect... (Approx 2-3 hours I reckon) Priced £130
Then quoted all windows inside and out inc conservatory every 5-6 weeks (Bout hour an half) £60
Women was over the moon with what was on offer, so we arranged time and date Mon Morn 1st thing.

Only for her to ring me back today to tell me her Area Manager has told her to get several quotes, So p*ssed off, chances are will loose it now to some Guy who will work for £7.50 an hour!
Bloody hate it when that happens!

might not, that is business you put a quote in and see what happens, if they contact a few you could still get it

but at your pricing I would doubt it, lesson learned don't be so greedy, give a fair price and do a good job

i think at them prices you probably will,  the prices for commercial are pathetic now,  i have been quoting some lately and the prices i am competing with, are pathetic

I bet he does. Not surprising, there's plenty of middle ground between £120.00 an hour and £7.50. You have one person to blame and it isnt the area manager.

Standard practice to get several quotes. If your pricing is accurate you won't get it as many will still make a good profit from less. You prob just made the other guy's quote look reasonable.

Have you been in the game long? Bit nieve to think care homes have that much money for auxilliary work.

Yeah I did go in with a high price, only because the more I was offering the more she wanted the jobs doing. She seemed over the moon with the prices when I gave her them couldn't wait for me to start. If there had been any mention of Several quotes from other companies then Yes I would of gone in a little cheaper but have to say not by much Prob £100 upvc and £50 windows.
It was only when her boss got involved that things went tits up.
Oh well live n learn, will always ask if we are one of many quotes next time.

I quote commercial as fairly as possible now rather than trying to rape the price as you get more work ,& the advantage is it is all times , all weathers , paid straight in bank etc

I wouldnt want it all week , but its a good bonus on top of residential , i think the best sole trader business is a healthy mix of commercial and some quality residential ,, Keeps things from getting stale each day too...

Just picked up £300 p.month in shops yesterday well chuffed.....Only 2 stores , but lots of cleans, and i went in fairly cheap and still thought i wouldnt get it. A few years ago i wouldve charged more ...and not got the work...its a learning curve

When you quote though you are usually 99.9 % up against your competitors, however not all go for the cheapest quote, they are supposed to go for best value, ie best option at fair price, so you have to bear that in mind when quoting , but being cheap always helps lol

Can you not offer to do the other quotes for her? If you get a couple of your mates locally to give you there letter heads, you could be the easily the best price/value.
Works well here!

I wouldn't go that far but I think you have chance.

Look she'll phone three - one won't turn up because he can't be assed with a conny clean. Another won't reply. Another might turn up and quote similar or a bit less. She might just fall lucky and get a newish guy needing work and get one a fair bit cheaper - who knows.

What you might do is phone back or write thanking her for the opportunity; tell her you have a run of jobs to complete; it is the school holiday season and schools are easier to clean with no kids about (you might have no school jobs but that isn't what I wrote was it? ;)) and that if she is prepared to wait until September weeks for you to turn up then you might be able to fit it in a bit cheaper.

If she asks how much cheaper say you'll need to work it out but only if she is seriously considering using you and after she has had her other quotes.

Sometimes these places have charity status and to comply they need three quotes for anything over petty cash; so it might be a case of her going through the motions for her manager.

Don't write it off - show interest and get her on side and it might swing it in a close race if she likes you and you are prepared to give a bit.
It's a game of three halves!

i went and priced a commercial job up, they rang 4 windys and i was the only one who turned up! i priced it very well and got the job easy,

standard business practice to get more than 1 quote, sit tight and wait theres still a good chance you will get the job

If you want the work, send her a mail with "confirmation" of the quote and knock a bit off.
