Can anyone recommend a starter truck mount?
Will be looking to get a machine this year.Good back up is essential,
I need to use as smaller van as possible.
Also, is buying second hand the best way to go?
Or buy new from the start?

Any feedback on the sapphire scientific that fits in transit connect?

Brian,
The most important consideration when buy a TM deciding where you want to take your business in the next three years or so.
If you're looking at only the domestic market then the Prowler / Phoenix / Blazer will fit the bill perfectly. If you're doing domestic now and want to get into commercial jobs then you will need something a little bigger. If you've got your eye on big commercial jobs then you may need a dual capable machine because big jobs often have to be done in small time frames.

So I'd advise you to sit down and think about these things and buy a machine capable of taking you where you want to go. The worst thing you can do is know where you want to go and then because you're only prepared to spend £x end up with a machine that can't take you there.
The issue of vans etc is secondary, identify and buy the best machine for your business and then get a van to put it in.

Can't speak highly enough of the phoenix, been a really good machine, got to disagree with simon to a certain degree, i don't do just domestics, my business is probably 50/50, and the phoenix is more than enough for me at the moment, yes a duel machine would be a bit better on commercials in certain circumstances and i have all intentions of upgrading to one, but not as soon as i thought i would have to, because the phoenix is enough! if i had the funds buying new is always best after all is said and done you cant beat warranty for peace of mind . if you buying second hand take your time to find the right one.  

i bought seond hand and have been very fortunate its has served me very well so far .

although i did no buy he tm from HM i have always been treated very well up there which speaks volumes for the custy service .   you treat them with respect they will help you out no end .  

having someone like martin just a phone call away if  valuable resource .

It depends on what you class as commercials. Once you start doing big commercial jobs you can find yourself wishing you had a twin capable machine because of time-frames and economics. Plus you get a lot more top-end performance with the bigger machines and that extra performance is crucial with long reach jobs. All I am saying is you have to think about where you want your business to go and what type of work you want to take on. I have an absolutely top of the range Titan 875 which is specially tweeked for cruise ships, which requires very high and very long lines with minimal loss of performace. The machine fits my business perefectly, anything less and I wouldn't be able to do what I do and that is my point. Get a machine that will take you where you want to go.
It sounds like you've done just that.

Simon's idea is all very well if you are going to set the world alight overnight, but I'm sure most people would make very good use of an entry level TM for a couple of years and armed with that knowledge and the money you have made , then it might be time to get a monster.

The simpler the TM the more likely you can get it fixed quickly, maybe even locally and believe me that's a major plus if you don't live in Cornwall.

Prowler, Pheonix, Blazer would all do a very good job and they are simple with no 'extras' which add little value except to the price.

depends which supplier is closer as you could always have that one machine that needs to keep going back to have some fault or another fixed, im pretty sure there is no machine out there with an umblemmished record. personally if i lived in scotland for example i would't want to go to cornwall to get it fixed!
