Rancid Dog Smell
« on: August 03, 2011, 07:14:20 pm »
Cleaned a carpet today, with the most rancid dog odour i have ever smelled. Took a 100% polyester rug home and used enzall, and craftex deoderiser on it, but still the smell is not gone. Anyone have any tips?

did the top of a staircase a few weeks ago, cleaned it and cleaned it, still a sweaty doggy smell remained   not nice, doused it with degreaser and rinsed an awful lot of water thru it and eventually the smell went. however we did do a lot of rinsing on that area.

Its the bacteria that live in the grease in the dogs coat that can cause the smell, hit it with high PH and heat and sanitize

this might be a glue/chemical reaction and not a dog smell. we had one that smelt of urine but no animal had been near it.

then again it might not, and if not then as gary b says, immerse in a paddling pool with some clensan instead of detergent. all depending on what type of rug though. if that don't do it then i would guess its the above i suggested.

hope this helps.

Strange how some odours come about. We found a "bad" instance of gassing off staining with rugs on a wool carpet yesterday. During cleaning, it started to give off odours very similar to sod met.....

Well spotted Mr West this is something that can happen with particular carpets ( long pile twist ) and the problem is in the adhesive, but if it's localised and where a dog usually lies it's likely to be the dog.

Agreed.....However, sometimes the dog's presence can introduce moisture to the carpet (I know this from my own dog, coming in wet from the river and smelling a bit funky!).  This moisture can then cause the same problems described above when these problem carpets are wetted.  Just a thought :)

However, having said that, foul odours from off-gassing or adhesive are not really the same as doggy smells in my experiences.

If the rug is a tufted construction, immersion is a bit dodgy - the latex can break down causing the rug's structure to be ruined.

If it's a hand-knotted oriental, subject to dye bleed testing, walk in the park!  An Axminster-construction rug should be OK to fully immerse too.

Need to know what you're doing though ;)

it is not outgassing, but did smell of outgassing slightly after cleaning. The rug, and house is the worst I have smelt of dog ever. It was the usual next quality item ;D
