Is it Sealed?  Vacuum off as much as you can vacuum off with a dry Vac (Henry or Similar) Using the soft brush attachment).  Then pre wet the surface and add some pH neutral cleaner such as Aqua Mix Concentrated Tile Cleaner scrub in gently and allow to dwell then vacuum off using a wet Vac and that should sort it.  If not you will have to resort to something like Aqua mix Heavy duty tile & Grout c leaner and repeat stage two above.  Why diidn't the chimney sweep mask off the area first?  He should be made to clean it IMO or pay to have it cleaned.  When it's done seal it with a good quality water based impregnating sealer.

I've done a fair bit of chimney sweeping (and might have to again the way things are) and would just say that it is fairly normal to get soot settling on the stone but believe me if it has only settled there then no worry just vac it off (never ever wet it without knowing what your doing). I'd be more concerned about the skirting boards nearby!!
Sometimes there are difficulties masking an area off but with stone there is no fear of ruining anything so I agree with Kevin, complain to the Sweep who should cleaned up after himself anyway.

ps how much did he charge?

Thanks for the reply gents, much appreciated! Ill give it a good sweep now and see how it turns out and let you know. He did mask off and seal off around the fire place but didnt cover up the stone and he did hoover up abit (but not very well) but i didnt want to touch it without asking you guys that know about stone. He charged me £45 to knock through the plaster board, sweep it and do a smoke test (which it failed because it was leaking out of the roof) so im going to have to have a flue fitted as well now  :( at least a few hundred quid to get that!
