I use microbore (6mm) as it's nice and light - an important factor if you trailing 100m of the stuff around after you! I also think it places less strain on your pump as there's less water to push through the hose.

I have a 50m reel of 6mm and a 100m reel of 8mm... 6mm is best for everyday use, its light and more manageable etc... however 8mm was best in the winter as the water didnt freeze in the hose like it did with the 6mm.

Without wanting to sound argumentative there is slightly more strain on the pump as the smaller the diameter the less 'space' there is for the same amount of water to get through.

Not that it matters much but it will affect the flow rate.

I have 8mm and love it.

DId 8mm really make that much of difference in winter I use 6mm but after reading that may get 8mm for the winter months

I don,t want to throw a spanner in the works but correct me if i am wrong if you are using 6m or 8m and it starts freezing up would it not be better if you up the flow rate as water that is running faster will not freeze.i have had this last winter a mate of mine was using 6m like me and he was on a flow rate of around 2/3 and is pipe hose froze up me on the other hand was using a flow of 6/7 and never had any problems what so ever.

So am I correct in assuming that 100m of 8mm hose will fit on to my blue hose reel that currently holds 50m of 12.5mm hose??????

6mm for me to,
How people can say it will put extra pressure on the pump, i dont know,
As the water comes out of 2mm jets

Switched form half inch to 6mm and believe it's the biggest leap forward since wfp was invented. Half inch get coggled around everything, 6mm just goes where you tell it. Tried 8mm and found it was like half inch.

We use 6 mm and although I've nothing to compare it too, it's great.  Very light; no problems.  It does the job like it's meant to.

Ive used 8 and just dont like it, its fatter to use, heavier and more akward to wrap on reel, especially if youve got 100m of it. Youd sturggle to get 100 x 8mm on a normal reel, whereas 6mm goes on really nice.

The 8mm hose which has been supplied the last few years is quite fat & heavy. Cleantech used to do superb 8mm hose with 12.5 mm OD.

However, Gardiners have just recently recommissioned their original spec hose. I have a reel of 8mm & it's superb! Better than the old Cleantech stuff. 100m easily fits on a standard 60m hoselock reel & best of all it has no memory!!!!! i.e. the hose just moulds itself to however it's reeled back in & it lays flat on the floor when reeled out, it also doesn't spring loose on the reel. Brilliant stuff!! ;)

There's probably enough room for 120 meters on my hosereel; though I only use 100 meters, which regularly gets all pulled out.

Because the water has less room to flow in the smaller hose. It is why transfer hose is wide. Its physics and has been discussed before on here.

That said it will make little difference, the only thing is that you will need to turn up your flow rate slightly.
