dilema?
« on: May 17, 2011, 07:52:19 am »
I still work 3 nights a week part time which I really hate.
I've built up a decent round with lots of commercials too.
At,the moment I'm running late as I have average 5 new customers extra a week.this is without canvassing as I don't have time.
Anyway I'm thinking about asking for a 4 week lifestyle break.
Whilst having 4 weeks off I'm gonna canvass and clean like mad.
Is this a good idea?
 Quit or not?
To be honest I spend a lot on diesel with traveling to the job I hate too.
Takings off all first cleans till march 7th 2014
October  total=  cleaned  extra per month
November = cleaned extra per month
Total £  so far.

if you hate it and costs money then it's surely a simple decision to kick the part time job
into touch - concentrate on your own biz.

you should be making far more from this and judging by how much work your picking up you
will have no
problems covering any shortfall.

Will the 4 weeks break give you enough time to build your work to a level you can live on?  It sounds like you already have a good base.  I know, it's daunting at first.  I didn't have that problem when I first started as it was back to the wall for me (unemployed).

Well done on building up the business, Doc; it sounds like you`ve done and are doing well.
I think a break is a good idea, rather than finishing altogether. Would it be unpaid leave?
It may give you an idea of what it`s like without that regular income and doing more hours on the windows; it is a physical job.
I`d be tempted to have a bit longer, if possible- it would give you more of a feel of going full time.
Good luck with what you do, anyway.

I think - particularly if you have a family to support - that this is a good idea, rather than just finishing your job.  It will give you a good idea of what it's like to be self employed without a guaranteed regular income.

I'd keep in mind (I'm a negative git I know) that we're having an unusually spell of great weather, and come Winter - well you know what I'm saying.

And if you're living with someone, what do they say about you finishing your job?

It a no brainer! You dont enjoy your job, you already have £2k pm already, Canvass like mad and if you have any holidays due I would take them. As Tosh said, We are having good weather now so dont expect it to stay like this all of the time and save up as much as you can for the winter.

It really is a great job and is hard work at times. Im knackered already and its only tuesday and now the wife wants to go out for a run! but the rewards of running your own business is great and well worth it.
The great thing about this business is that it is all regular work ie once we get a customer it is repeat custom as we return every month/6 weeks/8 weeks.

Doctorwindows i cannot decide if you are a lunatic or not. If your part-time job is not paying £15/hour in your hand then its the former.

If you hate the job that much... then go for it.

Sometimes, the job you've hated can be something you miss, when the novelty wears off about window cleaning.  I know I've had a good few low points with window cleaning over the past 9 years, and I'll probably have another few too.

Just wait till winter, when we have a third tough one in a row, everything's frozen up and you've got two big ice-cubes; one in the van, and one in your holding tank, and you're watching your savings getting depleted 'cos you've got to spend it on boring stuff, like gas, electricity, and food 'n' stuff; and you're kicking your heels going stir crazy, yet you've still got another couple of months of winter ahead.

It's not all fun, but that's life for you!  ;D
