IBC Question
« on: October 04, 2005, 11:46:50 pm »
Can anybody tell me if its possible to put an ibc into a van , all i have seen is 1000L ones , is it possible to get smaller ones , like about 500L ?
Would there be a problem with the lack of baffles , in fact what does a baffle look like ?
Im asking these questions cos the ibc i have seen come in metal cages and on metal pallets , this is perfect for van mounting surely .

 Any info welcomed .

I know the ones you mean, but I don't think the cages that come with them are robust enough as a van mounted support.
Its fairly straight forward to fit your own baffles.
Cut lengths of the 6 inch soil/downpipe that you have on houses into short lengths and stack them upright inside the tank.
Thats it, baffled tank!

Other will give a better description of how it's done, I only know that that is the general method for doing it.
Roy Harding has baffled his own tank in the manner, if her reads this thread I'm sure he will give a much beter explanation of how it's done.

Hi Rich

You can get a 600ltr from here

http://www.smithsofthedean.co.uk/Recycled%20Containers.htm

You can also get taps from them that you can fit a hozelock fitting straight on to.

To baffle tank use soil pipe as Ian said, cut it into 600mil lenghths and lay the tank on its side. Then you slide in the soil pipe and pack them in till you cant get any more in, you build them up like a honneycomb effect.

I've got a 1000ltr IBC in my van un-baffled, i have yet to fill it over 600ltrs, but the sensation is just like that of towing a trailer with a bit of weight in it. I have it fixed to the floor and strapped down with HGV ratchet straps. The water motion actually seems to help braking!
The tank is fixed inside a cage and screwed down through a wooden base and into the wooden laminate van floor and the straps are obvioulsy fixed to the vans load fixing points that are located exactly in the right places for pallets!!
I was going to go down the baffled tank route but have seen so many pick up trucks with tanks just sat in the back and thought that lorries carry 26 of these things at once there shouldn't be much problem, saved myself a good load of money too as I bought second hand off a farmer.

we put a 1000ltr baffled one in Dan @DSB's  new van - we took it to his local garage and they welded 4 big brackets to the underside of the floor beams , then they bolted it to the floor holding it down with some thick steel angle strips , the same way that Ionics etc do .

so yes you can put them in a van .. but baffle them to be safe .

no need to baffle if you use defensive driving tech eg. twice the distance between, twice pulling out distance and lower your speed to safer limits, for those whos driven a old landy you will be experts with their reknowned wow brakes WWHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOO JUST STOPPED IN TIME THERE ::)

MIND YOU THEY DO NEED STRAPPING DOWN WELL
