just thinking about the future
When your guy leaves your depo or house, do you pay him per hour while in traffic or from when he reaches the post code ,

i was in traffic today for 1hour and 20 mins :S

thats what i thought so that would mean you pay them for driving back too?

so that could be about 2 hours or so lost in travel? so 6 hours worked minus 1 hour break really only 5 hours on the glass but he is paid for 7? with the break being unpaid

Truck drivers get paid by the hour, whether they're sat motionless in traffic or not; they're not just paid for the distance travelled.

I just checked the gov website, it is a grey area, travel to and from work isn't covered as part of the week, but travelling to your house/depot would cover that.

When I worked on site the lads got paid from the time they arrived on site till they finished but not the travel. but I did because I did all the driving ;D so I was paid from when I picked the first lad up to when I dropped the last lad off, but not when I drove home or drove to the first lad ??? confused I am

This scenario isn't really travelling time in the sense that the employee is getting paid to travel from his home to his place of work.  It's from his place of work to his first clean; that's the issue.  If during that period he's stuck for two hours in a traffic jam, then the employee is still working.

I looked into this ages ago Tosh, and I am probably totally wrong because I can't find the info to back it up. But from what I remember if you pick the lad up and transport him he doesn't need to be paid until his arrival at first job, it wasn't really a problem when I did employ as all my work is local, so I paid him anyway as we would be on the job within minutes anyway

That sounds logical to me, Stu.  His first journey is from his home to the job.  Not from his home to his place of work (where he collects the van) and then onto his first job which would be the second part of his journey.

These things are calculated like army travel claims.  ;D
