I have been considering starting my own round, the one thing that concerns me (amongst other things) is that an area that I choose to canvas will have other window cleaners. From my perspective I just want to create the opportunity to earn an honest living and be my own boss. However I can understand how established window cleaners would feel for obvious reasons. How do established window cleaners view this situation? Is it just part of competitive business or do window cleaners keep a baseball bat for such people like myself? Are there any do's and don't in such situations?

dont undercut and dont slag off the other window cleaners ... pleanty off glass to go around IMHO ... few windies in the areas I cover and most happy to talk or just nod ... get the odd miserable git but just do me own thing so stuff em

Just make sure you charge a £1 less than everyone else and clean up the whole town, then when they are all back on the dole and have sold there vans and gear put your prices up a £1

Scott, if you intend knocking on doors and the customer says 'I already have a window cleaner' just say 'no problem, can I leave a leaflet with you in case he stops coming'

just leaflet the area and then knock a couple of days later.when you get some customers and another window cleaner approaches you just say they rang and me to clean the windows.I would'nt say "here's a leaflet just in case your window cleaner stops" if you get a few customers in one road then they will see you in the street and ask you to clean them. Keeps your Kneecaps connected to your knees 
Look for streets that have lots of dirty windows and maybe ask a few local windies if they know any areas you could canvass

I got a piece of paper through my letterbox last; 'Dougie Window Cleaner' accompanied by his mobile number. I looked out of my front door and there was my gate lying wide open. It reminded myself that the same Dougie was at my door six months ago and left the gate wide open then too.  : If he doesn't practice the most basic manners I'm hardly going to want him cleaning anything!

not done window cleaning myself so wouldn't know but how do people find they can get new customers from people who already have window cleaners? there must be so few reasons to switch from one to another that it must be very hard to convince them.

Dont worry its business...No one owns their customers nor the place they work in. I know people that clean locally. I contact them to say Im going to leaflet but if they dont respond and Im half way down the drive when they shout out...I'll post it anyway

Business is about NO#1 and that isn't them!

If they cant take competition they shouldnt be in business, and if they are doing a good job and turning up regular they should have nowt t worry about!!!!!!
