The Case Against Van Signs
« on: September 24, 2005, 08:38:40 am »
Hi Guys

Yesterday my son found someone taking photos of my van on my drive outside my house. This guy drove up to my drive takes a photo then turns around and takes the second from the driving seat of his unmarked van. by the time my son get in the house and i grab my shoes and keys he has gone?

Now in my view there can only be two reason for someone to do this one he about to nick it or two I hav ejust gone in the yellow pages and it one on my local competors. no problem with the second its the first that worrying.

Doug you are local to me keep an eye out as we might have soneone that looking to setup a new business with FREE equipment!!!

One of the problems that we all have going in the yellow pages is that we have to use our address and this lets all those people that would want to take from us what we have worked hard for and paid for for free. Next year I will be using my po box as i have seen some franchises do this and I think thats it a good idea.

I used to motocross with my son and we heard sorties of people being followed home and then their bikes go missing. Thiese people are capable of taking car with sat trackers on it so our vans are no problem.

Van signs not only advertise to prospects but also to these people.

It might be one reason that builders are buying silver van now. and not signing them.

Again I think I might go this way on my next van. its not just the equipment but the income that they take.

So anyone in essex take care just in case.

Respect

Have extra security locks fitted and use a steerig lock, better and cheaper than having insurance.

Ian ,

A few months ago someone tried to break into my Van which was on the road at the time but were disturbed by neighbours.

Now I park it on the drive , backed up to the wall with the car in front so any would be scum bags would have to get into both.

Thanks for the warning though.

On a lighter note maybe someone was admiring your sign writing.

I've seen your YP advert , will be interesting to see how it goes.I noticed you have no mention of AS which suprised me as I thought you were in the network.

Cheers,

Doug

Hi Guys

Thanks guys.

Glynn, when he turned around he toke a second photo. by time got shoes and keys he was gone.

I have nothing to hide from tax man or anyone.

Chris, what an idea might start to charge.

Doug, I was doing a job for someone in a street next to mine and they had their car taken from theire drive over night, when they where in bed!

I dont believe that any locks or extra security will stop someone that knows what they are doing. as I said car with sat tracking get nicked to order these days.

With reagards "AS" its not the type of product they you would advertise to the public, would be a waste of space. better to adtervise where you would find sufferers.

Doug have you thought about using a po box address? I think that this with putting van in garage over night is the best way to provent it getting nicked

As you guys have pointed out it might just be someone checking out the signs?

I know that you guys have said that signs pay for themselfs, but at what cost? how widespread is kit and van getting nicked from carpet cleaners or other types of cleaners?

Respect

Hi Ian
The ROI of van signed far outways the potential loss when taken on a national scale. Those whos equipment is not covered outside working hours or do not have insurance at all are taking the risk of keeping the insurance cash versus paying the premium and sleeping at nights.

We had a fire and flood restoration van stolen and burnt out with about 10k of kit plus they broke into our workshop and nicked tvs videos music centres etc etc all were replaced in full as that was how we chose to insure it.

With out Bin washing vans we chose not to insure cash in the vehicles this is because although each van could be holding around £300 at any one time, one theft of this amount is less than the premium and having got away with it now for seven years its cash in the bank.

But the wheelie bin cleaning kit installed in the vehicles is insured for full price as new replacement even if the van is 3 years old.

Its a numbers game

A thief will not spend time on breaking into a vechile which is fully immobilised, with extra locks. They would only contemplate it if they could drive the vechile away and would proberbly cut the side panel out to get to  equipment
