Doors, tailgate constantly opening and closing will fail in the end.

Well the struts would. I meant working practices really - can you see any advantages for either?
I've only had doors - can park closer perhaps and still open them, can access the roofrack with the doors open and can run the hose between the gap.
I suppose a tailgate might be nice to shelter under and give more access? Also a rear view.

I have a tailgate Hiace.

Yes, the rear view is nice but the window makes it a little less secure.  Mine's smoked so the scrotes can't see in.  Parking is easier because of the view, but you do have to leave a slightly bigger gap behind the van.  You can get reversing sensors fitted for around £100, which would give you the same benefit.

It's a Toyota, so I suspect the struts will outlast me.

It is nice to be under shelter when it's hacking it down, but I'm only under there for a few seconds at best.  I have external hose ports, so the door is closed during cleans anyway.

All in all, I don't see many positives but apart from the parking distance there aren't too many negatives either.  On balance, I think I might have preferred doors.

EXCEPT, tailgate prices do seem to be noticeably lower...so that may decide it.

Do you rate the Hiace?

I had a good look at one yesterday and am very tempted. 07 in silver with the tailgate.
Nowhere near as quick as my Despatch but it has a less powerful engine. It's the reliability and higher payload that interests me.

I have a astra van "tailgate" bit of a worry each time I open the door, think I'm going to smash the window with the ladders and have to bend over to get the hose reel out. If I stick with small vans I will get an escort next or one with doors.

I rate the Hiace so much you wouldn't credit it.

Mine had 100,000 miles on it when I bought it and it looks and drives like it's brand new.

Just bear in mind that if you're having a tank fitted, it's rear wheel drive (another plus!) so tank mounting points are a little tougher.

If you're interested, drop me an email (on my website) and I'll let you know how I sourced it dirt cheap.

Dave, Ive got a tailgate on mine and think its ideal . My van has done about 150,000 miles  and it still opens and shuts fine (you can also shut the door on hose and lock it) . Also nice for huddling under when it rains!
Surely its not so "fiddly", just having to open one door instead of two?

Dave.
I have a 55 plate hiace and love it. Not very quick but it drives as nice as our Audi  :)
