Cancellations v new custies?
« on: September 10, 2010, 07:58:43 am »
I've had approx £100 of work cancel over the last month but I've gained approx £150 during the same period. Mainly due to an ongoing leaflet drop. My biggest one to cancel was a doctors surgery worth £30 a month. Their explantion was that their maintanance team were taking it on.

ive lost a few lately and a few going over to 2 monthly.its getting tough for some people out there and the news channels dont help by constantly banging on about it!

i hope i get the church i quoted for this morning as itll be a good earner even if its only twice a year jobbie!!

im not the cheapest window cleaner round near me but im not the most expensive either!im trying to find a happy medium!i can quote cheaper in the area i work due to having a lot of very compact work so very little driving between jobs.i hate losing work but im getting a steady trickle of new work.

Last week I took on another lads round as he had to retire through ill health mostly nice people even if the prices are a little low but nice and compact so will live with the prices until the spring. Had about 4 cancel but replaced them with 6 new ones all at next years prices so overall up on the job.

Funniest situation happened last night when i was collecting (thats the other thing none of them pay by cheque he used to collect them all but will get them changed over bit by bit) anyways knocks on the door on this house for my money and I can hear them saying inside its the window cleaner have you got the money ready ... yes says the bloke so she ansers the door and kicks off about how wrong I was too assume that they wanted them doing by me and it was up to them to decide who cleaned their windows etc etc I tried to keep her sweet by apologising and saying I did try a few times to contact her but she was never in I didnt want to let her down so I went ahead and did them "so you cleaned them without my permission" she said and I could see where she was going with this line i.e. not going to pay me but behind her I can see the husband getting the tenner out of his wallet to pay me so shes banging on and on and then says well we got another bloke to do them and he does the houses either side too ....... thats funny says me the house to the right has just paid me and shows her his name and phone numbers so Im not lying and the house to the left I have made an appointment to clean their windows Monday morning as its secured like fort knox around the rear and shows her their name and phone number "well I dont know" she says mmmm says me obviously someone is confused but I dont think its me ..... at this point shes just about to tell me to go and get stuffed for the money when her husband reaches over her and passe me the 10 quid and says thanks for cleaning them  ;D ;D ;D ..... oh boy if looks could kill he would have died on the spot anyways she stornms off in a massive huff and the husband says I think you best not clean them next month .... errrr not a problem like says me  ::)

So thinks I best go and double check with fort knox next door and they said all was good for Monday and didnt know what she was going on about oh and then the icing on the cake "do you have time to go and see Stella across the road at number 39 as she wants you to do hers too"  so one down for about 30 seconds then all square but at a quid higher.

I didnt mean to upset her but didnt feel like going along with her fabrication and think I dealt with it without actually calling her a liar ..... out of 70 customers only her kicked off about doing them without permission everyone else was falling over backwards to welcome me ... had 5 cups of tea in one afternoon with loads of biccies as well .... think its been my best week ever and defo a turning point for my little business.

Interesting post ian. You seem to be growing your business at the same rate as me so always good to read other peoples similar experiences.  :D

I had 3 old biddies all neighbours cancel last week. They all phoned up on different days and asked to cancel just saying they had made other arrangments etc. I wouldn't mind but I only charged them £7 each (bungalows) They were the last that I would ever expect to cancel. You live and learn dont you.

Wine Rack SW London...7 shops
Carphone Warehouse...2 shops
2 schools
3 pubs
Loads of small shops and restaurants

All lost in past 18 months and can't seem to replace them unless I want to work for nish!

Houses:

More than I can cope with and they keep coming in. But I do prefer the regular commercial income...oh well...mustn't grumble ::)

As far as domestic work goes the cancellations and the new customers have more or less balanced out in recent weeks.  I did lose a fair sized commercial job though.  The manager wanted it cheaper even though I've been doing it for a while.
