Hi All,

I turned up to clean the outside of a large house with georgean windows today - £75 outside, takes about 2 hours... When I do the inside it's +£100, which takes another 3.5 hours.

Anyway... The guy comes out saying "We don't need you anymore, we got a cheaper quote!"

I asked him how much the new quote was?

His answer: £30 outside, £60 inside!

I laughed out loud, I couldn't help it... I told him not to expect the new cleaners back after the first time because they had under-quoted big time and left.

I didn't like them anyway

Why do you think they wont be back, £30 for just two hours work isn't bad. I bet quite a few on here have jobs that take two hours that pay £30 and I assume it was cash? Mind you I guess it depends whereabouts in the country you live, but to most it would not be bad money. £15 per hour cash

But that's not the whole story. You have to get there. You have to pay the fuel to get there. You have to pay the tax on the income, you have to account for the time to get there and charge it. You have standard overheads (advertising, phone, office etc.).

i had one she was one of the mums at the school and had a georgian farm house, we counted the panes once and without the 30ft conservatory, kitchen glass roof or her workshop at the bottom of the garden (for her interior desighn business) there were 750 panes of glass, we did the lot trad in about 2 1/2 hours very hard graft with squirty bottles and scrims, she always moaned that her prevous cleaner only charged £20 and was done on his own in a hour so i used to say well if you dont want us here just say 
I promised myself id drop her when i go to 250 houses, that was one of my incentives when canvassing!! but she got a summer hoper doing it now for £22.
i wont be going back

You're on (were on) £32ph to do this house in and out? Good luck to you mate but you were a prime candidate for being undercut in all fairness.

OK I probably wouldn't do it for £90 but one job?...one place for 5.5hrs...£110 with me...and I live and work in Putney SW London.

The trouble with the bigger jobs is that the customer knows exactly how much you are taking per hour and per day. In their eyes it's a pretty extortionate rate. If you are on the move all day no customers know how much you earn, they can guess but they won't be right.

you never hear anybody complaning about plumbers charging £35.00 call out when it only cost's  them £2.00 in fuel why should'nt we be earning a really good living we deserve it , but i get what you mean mate defo

very true,just think if you had to give say £60 for 2 hours work to a w/cleaner doesnt matter how much money they may have it will still pee them off

True Stan, but you should know the going rate applies to any house.

This is very true. And what i normally do for detatched houses out in the sticks is to tell them i usually clean properties like this for £15 but because they are off my round a bit i want £30 as i need to maintain my going rate.  Yeah, seems to work . I'm gonna say that bit to them too, 'the going rate applies to any house', i couldn't of worded it better myself.

I wasnt "on" £32 an hour on this job, I was "turning over" £32 an hour - There is a big difference!

Each to their own, but "turning over" £20 per hour is not much when trying to run your own business?

I often think I'm in the wrong game, The chimney sweep came last week, took 20 mins and charged £50.
By the way if you read this Mr Brimble, he is an old mate of yours from Denbigh.
