leather sealant problem
« on: July 15, 2010, 08:15:16 pm »

I cleaned and repaired a leather suite yesterday.

No problem with the cleaning, but the repair simple enough a little touch up pigment and sealer application, herein lays the problem :'(

i applied a gloss sealant and then a second coat of matt, well when spraying the matt tiny flecks of what I can only describe as like white flecks of paint appeared on the leather. What a bummer, nothing would remove it, and to correct the problem i had to touch up every little fleck with pigment and seal with the gloss, fortunately the area was in a place that is hardly noticeable and the custy was happy.
Now , i do recall the exact same thing happening on a piece of leather I was experimenting with a little while ago and I got to admit , my fault, i forgot all about it happening ::)

Has any body had similar thing happen? or does any body know what it could be ?

Sounds like you were using a gun instead of aerosols? If so it could have been some crap in your gun that got spat out.

Thats unusual Geoff for an aerosol lacquer to do that - never had a problem myself. What brand was it out of interest?

This can happen with matt finishes if the can has not been shaken enough or it has been left for a time.
The white flecks are the matting agent in the finish.
Did you do a test spray before spraying onto the leather to make sure it was working alright?  Sometimes the nozzles can be the probelm if they have been left and have become a bit dried out.
Can nozzles should be kept clean and test sprays (onto a rag or piece of card) should always be done before every use.

Unfortunately as you have found once sprayed on they are impossible to remove and you have to exactly what you did.

Hope this helps
