Customer wants us to clean the upholstery in the boot of his car which had FISH in which leaked mmmm which chemical would you recommend to get rid of the strong stink of fish

Many carpets in the boot of cars have either a thick felt or foam backing.  This may make it very difficult to remove the smell and therefore may need replacement.  Firstly though extraction clean the carpet.  Then apply Hydramasters Multiphase heavily to the front and back of the carpet.  Make sure you take the carpet out for this and leave it out till it is dry.  You may have to treat it 2 or 3 times depending on how bad the smell is.  Inform the customer that you may not be able to solve the problem though before you start.

Hi Barbara,
When we used to get called out to clean a mattress in hotels that had been urinated on we would flood the mattress.  The idea we used was to pour the chemical onto the suface of the mattress where the urine stain was and allow it to penertrate straight through to the other side which would mean that all the urine in the mattress was treated with the chemical.  You could try this technique with the car carpet.

Yes its a urine odour remover but works great on many pungent smells! Spray it liberally all over the carpet, both sides, brush in with a stiff hand brush. spray again and leave it for 20 minutes. then extract with hot water or any extracting agent you have at hand. Use defomer in the waste tank as its high foaming product.

....If you only have prochem chems to hand then use clensan the same way as i discribed the UCT and rinse with Odour fresh in the tank!

i agree, if using Prochem chemicals then Clensan should be fine but i think you may have to use abit more than just a spray especially if the smell has gone into the foam backing.

An hour round trip

If the carpet can be removed, it needs first of all power washing both sides, taking care you don't damage the foam.

Then it needs submerging in whatever product you end up using.  Leave it there for a good couple of hours, then have it out and power wash it off again.  Extract it off as best you can, maybe have to use a rolling pin to do the foamy side, and let it dry.

If it still smells, repeat.  Remember that it will probably be oily so you'll also need to address that issue as well as the smell.

Be aware that some car carpets, particulaly needlepunch, can smell fishy from even a water spillage. The more you work it, regardless of chemical used, the more it smells. Other carpets are fine and you treat as advised above.

Needs a good couple of months to disipate.
