How to remove paint
« on: April 13, 2010, 08:09:59 am »
Went to a property yesterday to do a quote, and customer has about half a dozen paint foot prints on a low profile synthetic carpet.

Ive not much experience at removing paint.I currently use Prochems chemicals.Which product and method of removal could anyone recommend?

Cheers Chris.

What sort of paint? If the marks are thin emulsion paint, it may be possible to soften them in warm solution then just flush out.

You must avoid thinning the paint and driving it deper into the carpet.

0208 974 5151 is Prochem's number - thier tech support will give you a method with the products you have on site - if there is one.

Cheers

Do you not have the Prochem spots and stains list you can download it from the Prochem site i keep it with me, and it says, Solvex which i have used for emulsion removal before just remember to apply to cloth not to carpet as its a solvent it can delaminate the backing of some carpets :)

I find the best method for removing emulsion is to apply steam from a wallpaper stripper carefully over the paint, once its softened  extract with your cleaning solution.

has no one been on any training courses Meths for emulsion paint.
Far cheaper than other solvents about £1.50 for 750ml or buy by the 5ltr or 25ltr. It evaporates quickly and is just the best solution.

What about if the paint has got to the backing, doesnt it damage it?

obviously you use it with care but as it evaporates so quickly the damage is just a fraction of what solvall spotter or white spirit can do.
Also there is not any oily residue to rinse out and it does not make the carpet stink.
I find it hard to believe someone is saying to use white spirit, it is used for thinning gloss paint and is totally useless on dry paint it stinks to high heaven is corrosive on latex foam and gel backing as well as underlays and is so oily, it is very difficult to rinse out. I would not even want the stuff in my recovery tank.
If you put some meths in a trigger sprayer and spray it on the emulsion then rub it straight away you will see straight away that it is breaking it up on contact. I used to do a lot of work for a loss adjuster where people had purposely tipped tins of paint (gloss and emulsion) on their carpets to make claims the loss adjuster would send me in and I would always be successfull in removing it. Even if it was a 5ltr tin that had been there weeks. This is something that I learnt within the first 2 hours on a course 20 odd years ago can understand it is not general knowledge. I always have gallons of the stuff around.

Hi,

There can be two type of paints (1) latex paint and (2) acrylic paint.
Which type of paint you did get on your carpet.
If paint is latex then you follow the following steps to remove these stains.

Don't spread the stain.Get a cloth wet and blot it.

Take some dish washing liquid and mix it with 2 cup of lukewarm water. Using a clean white cloth again, wet the cloth in the soapy water and blot the stain moving from the outside in.

Apply some odorless mineral spirits sparingly to a cloth and blot the stain with the cloth, then pour a little clean water over the stained area and extract the water with a wet vacuum. This rinses out any residue left behind.

vacuum that area. The stain will be completely removed from your carpet.

If the paint is  acrylic:-

Acrylic paint is water soluble while it still wet and can be removed easily. To remove the dry paint, mix some detergent and water together and soak a towel in the mixture. Then lay this on top of the stain and leave it for up to 2 hours. Then Vacuum the carpet until it is dry.

Thanks and regards

What about ICI 'New Work' white paint. This is teflon based and even when I tried nitromors it only softened it a bit but did not rinse out.

The chap from ICI said it was removable with exreme difficulty even when wet but would not tell me how.
When I said there should be a warning on the tin he said that it was professional paint and professionals don't spill paint!!! I then said the equivalent of rubbish begiining with bo and he rang off.
