NEW KID ON THE BLOCK, ADVICE SOUGHT
« on: August 25, 2005, 03:14:40 pm »
Hello all, as a new w/c with only 6 months experience i have found this website an absolute gem packed full of excellent advice from those with alot of knowlege and experience so thanks for that.
I currently w/c for two days a week and the remainder of my time is spent doing a dull office job in the city which brings in approx 15k a year. I really enjoy my new career move and have built up a reasonable amount of satisfied domestic customers and i know of other jobs for the taking. I am desperatly seeking any advice on becoming a full-time w/c and jacking in the day job.
Thanks Matt (leeds,west yorkshire)  ;D

Wait till youre earning enough to live off from windows.
If you are planning to buy a house get a mortgage before you go s/emp
Get a few quid in the bank for a cushion.
Do it in the spring when the weather is better and days getting longer.
If you have hols left go to a 4 day week using them up just before you leave and use the time to canvass like mad

Matt,
I done what David is suggesting, Had a office job, so Nov last year started doing windows and some gardening, got leaflets printed and started chucking them out so by May I went for it. All the money I had went in to the bank as my cushion so when May came I had 4 months of bill money saved, Now im all legal paying tax and have actually knocked the gardening on the head just w/c.

Take each step and have a plan

Paul

I'm still paying off the debt I incurred from routine bills from when I first started.  The transition to full-time window cleaning isn't an easy one!

Good advice here from the chaps Matthew and I endorse it - especially about doing just window cleaning - I faffed around with three different part time self employed jobs from 1996 to 2000 then two 'til 2001 then w/c only (but did other odd-jobs on rainy days too) then from 2002 virtually only w/c - should have bitten the bullet and done it in the first six months!

Oh, and go straight to wfp as soon as you possibly can!
It's a game of three halves!

;)Thanks for that advice lads as i suspected there is alot to way up before making the move full-time and as David says i will get the bank balance in a more healthy state and go for it during the early part of next year.
