Black inky water from wand
« on: May 10, 2010, 05:19:50 pm »
Got a call from a fellow cc, he's got a ninja with 135psi pump with internal heat exchanger,
he had black inky water coming out of his wand onto a white carpet (syn)  :o
He managed to rectify but in 20 yrs I've never come across this.

I suspect the internal black core of the solution hose breaking down or heat exchanger fault  ???
have any of you come across this?

Hello Paul, came on here to post this problem thought thats a coincidence ??? ???
Must say i was absolutley horrified to see this jet black spray come out of solution hose and it was very difficult to get out as well, as you suggested i spoke to Ashbys and the first thing they said was what you suggested the lining of the hose probably perished so its booked in,in the morning 08.30 i hope its not my 50ft length that cost me £280+ vat
15 months ago >:(to cap it off when i got my envirodri out of the van i found the casing
is cracked on the side with the on off switch woner how much this little lot is going to cost just when things looking a little bit better and i start putting some money back into the bank :'(

Paul,

Had this same problem about 4 years ago, but with an external (ashbys) heat exchange, found the thermostat to be faulty, overheating the system and melting the seals, when it happens i could actually smell the burning rubber, it started as an intermitent problem and eventually the thermostat will stop working so it needs attention. dont think anything will be wrong with the solution hose.

Regards,

Gary

I have had the machine working at home for the past couple of hours to see if i can eliminate what may be causing this tried running it through the 25ft length of hose i had worked fine then tried the stair tool to see if it may be the wand which is almost new also fine, now going to try it through the 5o ft length of hose considering what i have just read though i think i will leave it and drain the machine if the seals have gone on the thermostat then surely water is going to get in somewhere it shouldn't.

I have noticed that recently that the water coming out of the pump on ocassions it not completely clear, but today it was fine then it was like engine oil black just shot out for a couple of seconds :o  thank god it was an EOT if the customer had seen it :-[
I nearly cra..ed myself trouble was i still had half the room to do first time i ever left a job and thought i should have done a better job but what could i do :(

Had to phone customer for job tommorow left message for him i will be along in the after noon, fingers crossed, i know there is never a good time for something like this to happen but the last 6 weeks i have had no more than a couple of jobs each week, this week booked up for the first time ever, envirodri needs fixing, then the Ninja that thinks its a squid ::) and the dreaded "intemitent fault"
ching, ching Ashbys, should i give em a blank cheque or pay cash.

One of mine popped half way through doing the top rooms of a 3 story this morning, had only just noticed it looking a bit weak on Friday, thought too myself, must get that fixed.10 mins later it burst, was on it quick as a flash though, and just un cliped the hose and stuffed it down the vac hose, then ran to shut machine off,had to lug machine upstairs to finish off.Got it fixed for £10.54p,going to get another one made up from the place that put the ends on

I am ashamed to say i would not even know where to look :-[ but i intend to rectify that soon, at the moment my electrical expertise stops at wiring a plug.

I dont know what worried me the most, the thought of all this stuff on the carpet and the job not finished or the cost of fixing it all before the other jobs this week, did think about calling a fellow CC to help get me out the sh.t. i must get a spair machine but when you have one maybe two jobs a week its hard to justify, especially as it would leave just a couple of hundred in the bank it i went and got a brand new Ninja.

I have been offered the use of another machine,if mine goes on the blink,a fellow cc`er,who i have never met, just rang me out of the blue one night too say he had been reading on here, and felt sorry for me with all the trouble i was having !! How nice is that,we are in different areas, but we sort of overlap in the middle,i have since asked him too help out,on some big jobs i quoted (didn`t get them  :-[) But still nice to know,i think just about everything that could happen, has happened,so i am pretty up too speed, when it goes  boobies up

Had the same problem a few times back when I was using a powder in the tank. Since switching to plain water rinsing everything ok  . I blamed it on the powder and it probably was as it never happens now.

James if I can help in any way let me know. Wondered if the ebay hose would take high heat, as the ashby ones are wire reinforced with crimped ends at the connectors.
You would still need your heat protector covers tho.

there is a hose supplier near me (about £3.50 a foot) simple job to add your tails and connectors, hope it's not too painful on the chq book

good luck dude

Re "wondered if the ebay hose would take high heat".
I have just checked with that seller and he confirms that hose as well as standing 3000psi (which means it will definately have crimped ends) will withstand temperature from -20F to 250 degree F.
Its Goodyear truckmount user hose so def ok for portys.

Got to Ashbys in Dartford for when they open at 08.30 in the hope they could fix it and i would still be able to complete job booked in, when i spoke to them yesterday they said sounds like the inside of hose breaking down, i explained that it was black, looked like ink, i said how could it liquify the rubber they said there would probably be debry by at the filter on the wand, none of my spanners fitted and i broke the bloody nut trying to get it off, only to find that no debry at all inside ???
The upshot of all this is "drum roll, wait for it"  ::) its not doing it now so it must be ok :-X

Well that may be true but that experience yesterday is not one i want to repeat i would rather have paid twice as much and had a definate answer that this is what caused it and it wont happen again, especially as next week i have the customer with the white wool carpet and the glue spot on the carpet, the one i mentioned on another post, that guy  lives in a mansion with the swimming pool, i cant wait to squirt black ink all over his white wool carpets :'(  aprehensive dont come close, i think i will not use the steammate and use M power of fibresafe prespray maybe rinse with  plain water.

As expected other problems were found on the machine gaskets neaded changing, total cost £117 but that include some prochem glue spot :) yes i found the last supply of it, the downside though when i broke the nut holding the filter and nozzle i could not find it and had to assume that it was lost knowing that it was probably at home, but could not risk getting home not being able to find it and not being able to do job this afternoon you wont believe what they charged me for a brass nozzle and filter, i did not really take a close look until after doing my job as i was in a rush to get to the job, while waiting in traffic i got the receipt out.
one nozzle and filter £15.00 :o :o :o :'( i must get the right spanner next time going out in the morning to get the right size that was an expensive slip up

This happened to me about 10 years ago.  I used to add a couple of drops of a very concentrated lemon perfume, which Ashby's used to sell, to each tank, don't know why, just fussing too much I guess.  Anyway, it broke down the inside walls of the best pair of solution hoses I've ever had. Now only put one product into the tank these days.
