Changing Web Hosting Companies
« on: April 17, 2010, 09:39:02 am »
I recently tried to change Web Hosting Companies Its not Easy

Unless you tell  the present Company in Advance and if you go one day over you could be locked in for another two years or they will not release your domain.

Also trying to talk is impossible as you end up with a call centre in the philippines where they are not allowed to bend and come out with words like i appreciate what you saying but you have to pay for another two years before we release your domain.  Not just Domain fee but hosting fee aswell

You ask for someone in England cannot do try to trace UK number no listing try to contact Press Office before Posting on here  No response. Send in Help forms  no response etc et

The Company In Question is Streamline Net

sounds like you have a major problem.

its an old scam that when you buy your url sometimes the agent will buy it for you and let you use it. it reality its never yours. if it is in your name its really easy to move. just log in and look for nameservers change and then point them to the new web server.

The scam is that as long as you have that url you will be building value in it and its resale value goes up.

Or, the company is just not talking or helping you as they want you just to drop the url so they can pick it up ans sell it, or dont want you to leave.

The domain is yours and you should be able to move it by the control panel if not get yourself a back up domain now and start to work on it as if cant work the problem out you will get a massive set back with your web profile.

Two things about the Philippines one when the crash happened many companies went to the wall so that might be an issue, second it has lots of IT guys that are let just say not on the right side of the law.

If you cant move the URL forward it to new web space or new domain.

Respect

Hope that helps

Ian Harper

ps. read this, http://www.streamlinesupport.net/index.php?page=show&id=90

go here

http://www.123-reg.co.uk/

set up an account and then start the trans.from here you can use their web space or point the url to anywhere you like on the web. as i said all you need is the nameservers. just think of the url and the pages of your site as two different things. they dont have to be at the same place. as long as the url points to the nameserver where your pages are it all works

i reconmend buying your url's here and then you can move when ever you like. all mine are here but my server is not.

Where I have been caught out is  in the fact as we were finishing our Ideal Blind Site over Easter we went three days over the Web Hosting period and into aledgley another two year contract

My card details have changed so they did not get money.

We  do not want another two years as we got a better deal for multiple sites

I am happy to pay standard domain name renewal, and one months hosting fee

But they do not want to talk

I cannot get  into control panel until i pay for the two years if I do that I might aswell stay.

Yes we are  establishing other domains  but i want mine

I just want to speak to an English person

W
They are registered in gloucester and they had sensible English People in a English Call centre two Years ago

I have been with them for about 5 years

I speak from experience. pay for the two years and move your url and site it will be worth the money in the long term. they sound like scammers. any normal company would have been of more help to you. you have to see the signs.

the past two years work getting your site up the rankings is worth far more than paying them the money. look at it this way you can move and the only way to move is to pay. as you cant unlock the url without access to the panel they have you. this should tell you that you need to suffer short term to gain long term.

paying and then staying with them will only put this off for another two years. you don't even know if you can unlock the url, sure the help file says you can, but?

I lost i very important url once and others using the same UK based company lost a lot more.

I could show you lots of urls with good PR that are on the market for sale because owners did not renew in time. its BIG business.

Trust should be earned and this company by the sound have not earned it.

Respect

They closed over weekend

But probably left with No Choice.

I could spend hours fighting them, etc or go and clean some carpets?

if you haven't decided on who you'll next go with i can't recommend www.vidahost.com enough. fantastic prices, based in uk, always an unbelievably quick response time no matter what day it is, and very helpful. i've been with them for 4 years now and they clearly really appreciate it as when i email asking for this and that they often give it to me for free. can't get much better then that

But Heck its a bigger place so when I seek World Domination I should be Ok

Will be in Guildford some time in June visiting my Son

Ian,

Sounds like good news.

Did you manage to transfer the domain name as Ian recommended?

Update

I was going to wait until I had done it before reporting

It apears there is an organisation called www.nominet.org.uk which is a non profit making company and controls uk dot co. names

On checking my domain was renewed in Jan for two Years it is in my name registered to my address.

As Streamline Net will not help with transfer I am told by nominet all we have to do is pay them £10 plus vat and they will point it to the new host.
Ive no idea how you do this so will wait until my son Matt is available
As a precaution I have aquired some extra domains to point at my sites I am told this was done last night so here goes
www.Carpet-Medic.co.UK
I will keep others under wraps for time beingI Looks like that bit worked . Now all we  need is the mothership back home

Yep, that one works.

Ian, if you can still access the Streamline account, then you can change the nameservers and point those to your new host as well. Well worth a tenner if they can do it.

Have you got the carpet medic Norfolk site on your PC (or is that it now resting on a new domain?
