help with quote/HS please
« on: August 09, 2005, 03:40:35 pm »
 Hi Guy's

Can anyone help?

I went to do a quote today on a large building and noticed that to clean one side of the building I would have to climb up
onto a Flat roof and use that as my work platform to be able to reach these windows? is this ok to do? or would this be classed as against health and saftey?

Thanks

Rob

According the the WAHD:

Ladders can be used in certain circumstances, (when all safer options are unpracticle) but the following must be done:

Quote
5. A portable ladder shall be prevented from slipping during use by -

(a) securing the stiles at or near their upper or lower ends;

(b) an effective anti-slip or other effective stability device; or

(c) any other arrangement of equivalent effectiveness.

So you can use ladders to get upto the flat roof; but I don't know if you can use the roof as a platform.

The rules in full are here:

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2005/20050735.htm

Good luck with the quote!

Personally, if this job is for yourself and not employees, then I'd use my own judgement and common sense regarding working on a flat roof, regardless of the working at height directive.

If I was asking an employee to do it though (not that I have any - well apart from Wor Lass - whose adamant that I am not her employer) I'd stick to the rules like glue.
