Staff own mobile phones
« on: April 25, 2010, 01:10:40 pm »
Hi All

Does anyone have this problem?

We have guys who go out and clean houses for EOT and like, they go off and spend the day at the house to clean it, sometime I get a call at 3pm  saying that they may not finish the house, then you find out they have spent half the time on their mobile phone either texting or on facebook,
I tell them they have to finish the house and the comeback comments are " we finish at 5 and this was a bad on"
I have given out memos requesting the phones are not to be used but while I am not there what can I do.
Does anybody else have this problem?

Regards

Nick

yes i had it with my guys, what was worse was the fact that they were compan phones, when the bills came in i went mad, foget the cost, purely the amount of time on the phone. !!

unfortunately its a respect thing or the lack of it, some employees take the attitude that, you the employer are lucky to have them, i know totally wrong.

spot checks seems to do it !!

A common problem. We are currently working on the most tightly managed building project that I have ever experienced. The rules are tough but everyone from the lowest of the low to the head honchos have to follow the same rule. Mobile phones are not allowed full stop except at breaktime in a designated are - all done under the guise of 'elf 'nd safety. Make it a condition of your employment contract specifically for this reason. You will never lose an ET (employment tribunal) if your rules are for H&S!

hi there

mobile phones are being banned on a lot of sites, two reasons are.

1. when people are standing up and talking on a mobile phone they generally walk around, if on a scaffold they could potentially trip or worse fall off.

2. again if you are on a mobile phone on a site, you are less likely to hear of see the loadall or jcb moving around.

thinking of somthing else, i might need to check but, you should issue a mobile phone policy to employees re use in vehicles, as corporate culpability is now a big thing, i think you are supposed to state to emp not to use phones etc etc, i may even have a policy in a pile of paperwork somewhere.
