Change that dirty water!!
« on: July 22, 2005, 09:56:57 pm »
Now I know all you purists are going to say "get a WFP system".  But I ain't got one.  So for all you bucket chaps..
How often do you change your water?  It's not so hard this time of year, just find a tap.  But I prefer to use hot water, so ..
Has anyone got any suggestions for a container that keeps water warm in winter?  You know, when everyone is out, and you need clean water, its about 3 degrees and your water is now black and may have eels in it you've had it so long!  I've looked in places like camping shops but no joy.

I use the same water all day - no problem.  If I have leaded work I change it sometimes as it can get a bit dirty.  On plain glass, it stays fairly clean.  Even if it is dirty, it still cleans the glass fine if you are using a squeegee.

I carry a 5 litre container ( there are always lots of them around )for hot water, if I know I cannot refill bucket (normally every couple of hours ) then fill up container where you can,(from home if you have to) it stays warm for at least three hours in summer and about an hour in winter. As for how often to change water I hate cold water it makes my hands crack up pretty bad and as for dirty water god only knows what muck is in there after a few hours and the more you do the less water is left in the bucket, I doubt very much that I could make one bucket last all day.

I use a 20 litre container which I bought from a argricultural suppliers, but you should be able to find one in camping outlets and places like that. I fill the beginning of the day with water thats so hot I can barely stand it, and it manages to keep reasonably warm for the day (well it never gets really cold).
Also I use it for another purpose, as the cloths tend to get wetter more quickly in the winter, after each house, I'll drape the cloth over the container, and not only will the cloth be dry by the time I've finished the next house, it also acts a a insulator for the water! I use microfibre BTW, I only mention that coz I think they dry more quickly anyway.

Thanks Mike G

I can't stand dry cracked skin.  No rubbish about soft hands, I just can't stand it. So hot water helps.  And I just need to know where to get a good container to keep it hot.  I use Neutragena cream for my hands which is good, but not enough.
any other suggestions?

Used lots of creams and none seem to work to well,  best cream I have used I had from doctors it was some kind of steroid cream! going again this week to see him to get some more, apparently they need to see you each time to check condition of hands? As for containers if you use washing up liquid for your windows buy a 5 litre tub next time and when it is empty use the container for water, failing that most cleaning products (degreaser, floor polish etc) comes in 5 litres, your sure to come across one somewhere.

As for bad hands mine have only been bad for the last few years and I have been doing windows for 18, so the question is what has changed in the last 3 or 4 years to make my hands go bad? I use washing up liquid for my windows and most now seem to be concentrated so I wonder if that is the problem I am now buying the normal variety (not concentated) to see if that helps.

i always use barrier cream on my hands first thing in the morning then put on non sterile gloves like doctors and nurses wear , hands do sweat a bit on hot days but on the hole keep dry and soft feeling :)
