Furniture Wood Dye...Help !!
« on: November 30, 2009, 12:07:23 pm »
Did a schoolboy error the other day and placed dining room table onto a damp carpet.
Any tips on how to remove the consequent 4 leg stains ?
Heard Nitromors could do the trick but dunno whether to risk it !

Any advice would be appreciated.

I have had decent results with Chemspec Wet Solvent for this type of problem.

I'm not sure if they Sell CTI (Proschoice) in the UK? They have a product called Stain Magic, that works pretty good on those dye type stains. I have noticed guys talk about Prochem on here, not sure it is the same company as in the US, but they make a simular product called "Stain Rescue" it too is a hydrogen Peroxide based product.

Normal solvent spotters, followed by nitromors, could well be permanent tho :'(

Red RX with the use of an iron and damp cloth sometimes works.

Terry,

I know you can get some very un-helpful and silly answers when it comes to posting questions on this forum. This can be both confusing and irritating for the person who posed the question.
I will try to help you out as best as I can..

The only thing I can suggest in this circumstance is to head for the hills. Grow a beard and live a reclusive lifestyle for a while.

Hi Terry,

Niromors is dichloromethane and is unlikely to damge the carpet and may remove the stain.

The other route to take is to try to bleach it using either hydrogen peroxide or sodium metabisulphite but it will be difficult.

Cheers

As Tony said Prochem Red RX may also do the trick with the iron method.  Dave, I have used nitromorse on paint splills in the past with fair results.

Jonny F,
Prochem Europe make their own chemicals & are different from the ones over in the USA.

 Richie,

Its a shame they do not share some of the specialty spotting products with their sister company in the UK......I'm surprised they would manufacture the Red RX (for synthetic dyes) and not Stain Rescue. It might have to do with laws regarding chemicals sold in the UK? This product has a much different chemical make up then the Red RX....that is if it is even simular to what is sold in the US. Below is a link to the product I'm talking about, Prochem in the US calls it Stain Rescue and CTI calls their version Stain Magic. You will see in the link that they make a version for wool carpet and rugs as well and one for synthetic carpet. I buy mine from Bane Clene, maybe they handle it in the UK as well? The second link tells you how to use it.

what about reducing agent and a steam gun?  Might work but obviously depends on what colour carpet, hope it's cream otherwise results are... might as well toss a coin!

Actually The owner of CTI (Pros Choice) was producing these types of products long before the big guys started making their version. I remember15 years ago when CTI introduced these 2 part chemicals it really revolutionized the US carpet cleaning market. We were still using unbuffered reducing agents and 1 part red dye removers..........the introduction of these spotters now allowed us to remove the red......without part of the carpet color and with his other products remove strong dyes and furniture stains with out damaging the carpet.

And yes Richie, knock out is yet another version of this type of spotter, can you buy that in the UK?

Works good for those ugly yellowish green plant stains left over from flower pots on carpet. That made me look like a hero just this past week, 3 other cleaners had tried with no success. Its not perfect, but it works about 75% of the time if you follow the instruction to the tee. I have found my success went up when I started using a measuring cup verse the glug method.

Just returned a large well made turkish rug to a customer - it had very fine wool with some silk threads in it - they had done a DIY stain removal of two full glasses of red wine simply by using soda water and towels and perseverance - as it happens very successfully as the red stain was almost gone - unfortunately they replaced a large coffee table with great big brown woodstained legs back on the rug and one leg leached a brown stain in a neat square. They asked me to remove the stain and I am long enuff in tooth to qualify any outcome beforehand - they asked me to go ahead anyway.

I decided to stake my faith in Red RX with initial success reducing the severity of the stain but such was the pattern it eventually started to lighten the surrounding colours. I used the hot iron method and as I say it lifted some stain two or three times onto a damp towel and then just plain stopped working - its not a very practical solution/method as it says use a hot iron and I find very few stains are iron shaped! So you just have to use the heel or point of the iron - plus it says leave on for 15 secs which is a mighty long time on fine wool!

The rug was substantially dirty as well all around the edges and the rest of the wine needed to come out as well - so part of my offer was this and a good clean as well which we did very successfully - rinsing with PC f and f r to leave it with a great hand to the surface. I was disappointed not to get more of the stain out but testing later with StainPro and coffee stain remover (ie both ends of the ph spectrum) showed nil water soluble movement - happily customer was impressed with the clean rug and resigned to the stain - she wanted the rug back quickly for guests coming so I didnt have a chance to experiment further - pity cos' if you can get a stain moving usually its just a matter of time but on this occassion red rx gave up before I did
