Oh you've got to laugh but best not to do it in their face ;D
Went to do a quote this morning on a property up a private drive over looking racing horse stables, the sort of place that must have just cost 1.5 mil
She has the decorators in doing the whole place up and wants a full post builders clean, carpets and windows.
I couldn't believe the words that came out of her mouth.
"Well the thing is I haven't got a lot of money and my ex husband has frozen the bank account and he's being a pig about it."

Yeh that's right she has just bought this place for herself and 2 little darlings for well in excess of 1 million and is trying to get a low price for all this work.
Makes you wonder what she must have been living in before?
How the other half suffer.  ;D

Im sure she will qualify for help from the government...tell her to go down the job centre, fill out the forms etc, and of course you will do the clean for nothing as you feel sorry for her!!! ;D ;D

thats how people like this keep thier money, in her mind you are a little person who is insignificant, you don't deserve her 'hard earned' cash so she will try and pay you as little as possible

........ and she'll think you should be happy to get the little she pays you >:( >:( >:(

I have to say that the type of client you describe have been an asset to my business over the years ???

Do you normally work for this type of customer?

Here's how I see it.  Someone with 50k in the bank who lives in a 4 bed detached house can hide it, they blend in to the sales reps and middle managers of this world.  When you turn up on the doorstep they know you don't have £££ signs flashing up so they don't feel like you're there to rip them off.  They're not so defensive.

However, these people with the mansion house and the selection of luxury cars outside cannot hide the fact that they've got a few quid.  They must go through life constantly battling against businesses and tradesmen who think that because this client is rich they can fleece them for every last penny.

Who has the right to do that?!!  Nobody, but of course some try it on so they have to put up barriers initially.  Her "don't want to pay too much" is an opening gambit, she's being cautious and sounding you out, it doesn't mean she won't pay your price if you sell it to her effectively.

These customers are more than willing to pay a decent amount for someone to do a quality job for them, but here's the crunch... once you've gained their hard-earned trust you have a constant source of business from them!!

Too many people in business can't see past the end of their nose.  Just want to make it clear this is NOT a personal dig at you Neil, I'm not really referring to your words but many people have similar misconceptions about these sort of client and it boggles my mind!

We did a flood job in Yorkshire. Huge property used to belong to a very famous businessman, can't say too much. Anyway now owned by a GP and a Vet with his own practice. So probably have well in excess of 3k a week coming in.
On my second visit noticed some forms on the hall table. They had filled in the forms for the council hardship fund. They hadn't even lost any furniture in the flood it was only floor level and was even dried out without stripping.

Many a person go for the instant sell where as you Jim have found a way of romancing them a bit (you cad) the only way you can sell to the these people is to go and see what they want.

No offence taken mate.
No it's not the first time I have heard the "Money is a bit tight" when there's a fleet of 09 Reg BMW's on the drive but I have a pricing policy that runs across the board so it doesn't matter to me if it's a mansion with 200 sq/m of carpet or a housing association property with 40 sq/m. The price per metre roughly stays the same depending on the difficulty factor.
This job asked for the quote to be broken down into various sections so she could pick and choose which bits she wants doing and that is what she got.

BTW the topic is very much tongue in cheek about people who can't hide the fact there is clearly a lot of money available, but I did laugh about the ex husband freezing the bank account and with 8 paint/decs on the property I'm not surprised ;D
