Silly question i think !
« on: October 25, 2009, 10:49:17 am »
Have just taken on a worker for 2 full days a week, hes only on min wage at the moment until he is up to speed , this means i pay him about £100 a week , 5k a year , my silly question is ..... As he is costing me 5K a year , does this come off as a 5K expense , thus meaning my net profit is reduced by 5k a year and i will be taxed on the amount left ?
Or does it work another way?

All input appreciated

its a business expense co comes with your costs,  thus reducing your profit, but its a bit more compliciated that that, your accountant shoudl sort it out for you no problems,  just keep records of what you pay him, aatrd tax and ni deducted

you need to make sure you set up a paye scheme through the inland revenue and pay his tax/ni monthly or quarterly also he will be entitled to holiday pay 28 days per year
If your accountant is any good he could set this up for you

Business link have some really useful stuff on employing, PAYE & NI thresholds; when to register as an employer; holiday entitlement etc.  Google business link and select your area, it's free to access/download etc, they also do a decent contract of employment that you fill in and then download.

no he will be entitled to 2/5 ths of the holiday entitlement as he only works 2 days

go on hmrc.gov.uk

no better advice than there, they write the laws lol

you will get all sorts of answers on here and not many are correct, try and pick out the guys who have big businesses and they will usually be right

but try hmrc its really good

Min wage is £5.82 per hour and it might have up lately so 50 for 2 days is not on.
