Most people on here will say go for slow speed ,, I have used a high speed for many years with no problems.
I clean carpets
I dry Buildings

Between 170rpm and 230rpm is the accepted norm.
You can get carpet brushes to agitate.
and microfibre of cotton pads to clean the carpet.
Its the solution you spray on the carpet and the pad that will do the cleaning but speed is reckoned to be important as you can scorch certain fibres at too high a speed.

can I add

you can scorch certain fibres at too high a speed......... if the carpet/pad is too dry, but if the carpet/pad is too wet then drying times are extended and one of the good points of rotary is the quick drying time.

I hope, Andrew, thats a local carpet cleaner selling up - too many doing really cheap jobs.

If the fibre is correctly lubricated it will not be scorched , Like I said I have been using this method for 17 years with zero complaints of this nature .  I have seen plenty of shrunk carpets (bw)  due to use of extraction machines.   I  currently use a twin speed WETROK , with a victor sprite as a back up.

Slow speed being necessary for bonnet buffing is a big myth in my opinion, thousands of carpet cleaners in America use this method. The benefits of speed ,by far outweigh the possible down sides.
