Instructions
Things You’ll Need:
Vinegar
Ammonia
Dishwashing liquid
Baking soda
Step 1:
Fill a 5-gallon pail with about 3 gallons of hot water. Let the water run for awhile until it's steaming hot. Piping-hot water reduces the time it takes your steam cleaner to heat and vaporize.
Step 2:
Add 2 tbsp. of vinegar, 1/4 cup of ammonia and 3 tbsp. of dishwashing liquid to the pail. You can also add 2 tbsp. of baking soda, Febreze or another odor deodorizing household solution to your mixture for a fresh scent.
Step 3:
Mix everything together thoroughly. Pour the homemade steam cleaning solution into your steam cleaner vacuum up to the fill point. Proceed with your steam cleaning project and refill as needed. This recipe should be good for two cleanings.
Tips & Warnings
Be sure to vacuum your carpet or other surface before using your steam cleaner. The cleaning solution will mix and work best when piping hot, so have all of your ingredients ready and waiting when you fill up the 5-gallon pail with hot water. Then load the cleaning solution into your steam cleaner vacuum as soon as possible. You may also want to add the ingredients and hot water directly to your steam cleaner tray---most steam cleaners hold about 2 gallons of water, so just halve the ingredients.Your house might smell like the vinegar for awhile, but it should go away once the steam-cleaned surfaces are dry. Spritz everything with Febreze again when dry.If you don't like the harsh smell of regular ammonia, try using lemon-scented ammonia instead.
Never add bleach to this mixture, since it contains ammonia. The combination of ammonia and bleach will create harmful fumes and could cause you to pass out while steam cleaning
