Hi all,

I've just laid some vinyl flooring in my office area, and after fitting cleaned off some sticky marks in a couple of places, but no matter how many times i clean the patches the dirt is attracted just to those places again.

Does the vinyl need sealing to repel the dirt again, its driving me crazy, the rest looks like brand new except for the two dirty patches, its just been cleaned with flash & warm water.

tried that also, and the marks come off and there is no stickiness, but a few days later the marks are all back again in exactly the same pattern,

i guess there must be some adhesive still in contact with the floor, but is just puzzling as i've cleaned it several times

i know nothing at all about flooring so probably (or should i say definately) wrong here.
but could it be a faulty tile and the glue is penatrating from underneath through the tile, either way i'd just replace the tile with another, that'll fix it.

sorry just read the post again, its not tiles is it, and so prob not glue under it, hey ho. the thought was there

Have you got any off-cuts to test some solvents on Steve?

A floor polish stripper mixed up strong and agitated with a hand pad might shift it.

Presuming it's adhesive, I'd guess a d-limonene based solvent might be best at getting the adhesive off.... but it might also be the most likely to damage the surface of the flooring material.

If that's a no-go, an alcohol-based spotter might  do the trick.

After you've cracked it, yes, a good few coats of decent quality polish will help keep your floor looking nice and shiny and easier to clean.

As a last resort, you could try just sealing over the top of the problem patches.  May fix it or may look worse though!

New floors come with a factory applied coating which needs to be stripped off before you seal it and then apply the desired coating. i.e High gloss polish etc

The most common cause for new floors looking bad is not taking off the factory applied protective coating.

Any chance of a picture of the particular staining, or will it not show up.

Can I ask just for clarification, is it commercial grade flooring or domestic.

You could hire a buffer - should be no more than £15 - 30 for the day and purchase some stripper and reseal.

it almost seems the protective coating has come off in the areas that have been cleaned, so think i will find a product to replace this after giving it a good clean once again,

Have cleaned also with white spirit and think this has stripped a layer off the surface so it seems to be picking up a dirt like a magnet
