Hello,

I've got a job I've been asked to quote for and I'm unsure what I should charge. It comprises of...

The general cleaning of a five bedroom house, two receptions, two bathrooms and a large dirty kitchen. It will involve everything from cleaning the walls with sugar soap, cleaning picture rails, dado rails, skirting boards, windows inside and out including frames inside, radiators( about 9 I think) and also cleaning all the carpets that are in alla rooms apart from the two bathrooms and the kitchen. I would describe the house as large georgian house rather that a new one.

Any ideas as I'm usually only used to carpet cleaning for which I'm gonna quote £200.

I do the same sort of thing, and i hate every second of it
I do a walkround of the property with a pen and pad and estimate how long i think it will take me to do each room, i write down any areas that  may have a bit more work, ie if i'm in the kitchen and i have the cooker and fridge to do.
Incidently if you do have a cooker then quote that sepperatly, the average price is about £50. Work out how much you want to be paid an hour, i would say between £12 & £15ph, i command £20ph  but then i have a good reputation and can get it Its still rubbish money compared to Carpet cleaning, but it gets your name about

Anyway, if you havent done this before, you will have to add another hour on the job because you will find that it will take you longer than you expected.

Thanks, I was just in carpet cleaning mode as that is what I usually do, though my plans for world domination involve branching out too so I'll try it there too.

£200 is ridiculously low for the size of house you're talking about.

If there are stairs in the house, you should be charging £200 for carpets alone and probably the same again for the other cleaning.

I would allow 5 hours for two people plus the carpet cleaner

Nothing wrong in branching out as long as you price for profit! Don’t do domestics cleaning only commercial then they only clean to a price!

Sound more like Edwardian to me! Sugar soaping walls, what about the ceiling? Don’t forget stepladders. If it has chandeliers I can recommend a company.

I take it this would a initial clean (commercial talk) price would be more or less double.

This sounds similar to a five bed house we cleaned recently £ 540 inc carpets at £ 230. This was a 2 day job for a regular client.
But we do not include cleaning of walls as this can be a nightmare.
If you start to clean walls that have been emulsioned any dirt, cigarett staining can spread and cause a complete mess.
I would never include cleaning walls as part of a service.
I usually tell the cust that we will try and remove scuff marks on walls but cannot always be removed as paint can come off.

You need to cover yourself with a comprehensive quotation.

Without seeing it I would be booking 4 days to complete. You would be surprised at the time this would take 2 people especially the walls. Do they want the walls cleaned before repainting or is the clean to be finished product? Personally I will not clean walls if It is to be the finish, Only when they are too dirty for painting or smoke damaged will I attempt to clean. A really dirty kitchen 4-6 hrs alone without appliances included.

i would say £225 -275 and see if u can get add ons during the job phone em up and say well you know the rest

We do this type of work all the time and have done for the last 15 years , I would suggest that anything much under £550 would sell you well short, dont be afraid to quote a decent price, if they quibble you can always come down a few pounds but you can never add on when you have already seen the job
