BEST TYPE OF VAN FOR WFS?
« on: March 28, 2005, 07:26:43 am »
I HAVE A (V) ESCORT VAN AND I HAVE WFS FITTED WITH 250LT TANK, I WAS THINKING OF PUTTING EXTRA 250LT TANK IN, BUT I THINK I MIGHT BE OVER
WEIGHT ( I AM NOT SURE OF VAN TOTAL WEIGHT I CAN CARRY) I THINK IT MIGHT BE 550K, TO TANKS FILLED UP WOULD BE 500K LEAVING 50K (NOT VERY MUCH)
IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE WHO COULD ADVISE ME ON THE BEST VAN TO BUY

THANKS
STEPHEN

Gosh Stephen,

I don't think there is a 'best' van as such, it all depends on the depth of your pocket.

If you are a one man band, and are not doing very large accounts, ie, the sort of work where you are going to go through 800l or nore of water in single day.
Then you could go for something like a Peugeot Expert/Citroen Dispatch/Fiat Scudo.

You could fit up to a 650l system in one of these, they all do a model that has a 900k load
Next size up is the Vivaro/Traffic/Transit/Relay size vans. You can go for an 850l system in one of these, or larger still if you go for the LWB versions.

My own personal opinion is that vans such as the Ford Connect/Escort/Partner size vans just aren't big enough or able to carry the load.

I'm going to need a van myself, at the moment I working out of a hatchback car.

First I am going to go for a Peugeot Expert, then it's a Vauxhall Vivaro ???

For me the problem is (problem ???) that my work load is increasing all the time now as a result of going over to WFP, and if I go for, say, a Peugeot Expert, I don't want to find 2 or 3 years down the road that I really should have gone for a Vivaro :-\
So in your purchase of a van, you do also need to be at least reasonably sure that it is going to be big enough to cope with your work load for a few years.
Yes, I know we can all buy another van, but you will have kitted it out with the relevant sized tank and system.

Its all good fun isn't it ;D

You need to inculde your own weight and equipment weight in any van payload. So if the payload is 550kg it does not mean you can put a 500lite system in it as the water it self will weigh 500kg then theres the tank weight and equipement and your own weight to add and by now you are looking at 700kg approx which would put you over by 150kg which is not good for the van and if your be breaking the law.

When I get my wfp, I am going for a lwb hi roof transit 350, as:-

1) it will allow me to expand wfp equipment in the future

2)will have enough space to carry a ladder and poles inside vehicle for greater security

3)will have enough space to carry a pressure washer and carpet cleaning machine

btw, does anybody else use one of these vans?

im looking at the expert/dispatch/scudo myself at the moment. Should be plenty ok. if you run out of water then just fill up a bit in the afternoon.

How many hours work should you get from a 650 ltr tank then??

I use a Citroen Dispatch as mentioned above, i have a 400 lt system fitted and believe me you would not want to carry more than this.
A 650 lt system would put you way over the weight limit.
Bear in mind your hoses, poles, driver, passenger, fuel, odds and ends, ladders etc.

400lts will last me most of the day, that is doing both tops and bottoms and a few conservatories as well.

Denzle,
The one model of the Dispatch has a load rating of 900k a 650l tank shouldn't put you over weight.
I know of of guy who has a 1000l tank in his Peugeot Expert :o He doesn't fill it all the way up, but yes, he will be over weight a lot of the time.

But you still have 250k to play with, average man weighs about 75-80k? Small extention ladder for access, what, 10-15k? your trad gear, weight of the tank itself, full tank of fuel?
With everything piled on, the tank full to the gills, ditto the fuel tank, you would probably be pushing the limits, but 250k is a lot of weight.

Actually, if pulled over onto the roadside and having your vehicle weighed, you may well find that the total weight might be under the limit, but the loading on one or more wheels may be over weight.

It isn't just the weight that counts, it's the distribution of it, and it is that area you are most likely to fall foul of.

So does anyone think that a berlingo 800 could handle a 400 litre system, and what is the structural difference between the 600kg and the 800kg vans?

I got a 400ltr tank in a 600kg berlingo and it seems fine, that maybe becaue I have the HDI version. I reckon the standard 1.9 would be like a slug as I drove my ex bosse's without a tank and it was terrible compared to the HDI.

Is anyone using a Mercedes Vito or similar? How does this van compare to the Fiat Scudo/Peugeot Expert/Citroen Dispatch?
