Canvassing Techniques
« on: March 19, 2009, 11:11:15 am »
Hi everyone.
Ive recently begun canvassing for a friend, finding him new work, etc.
I am REALY enjoying it, and am finding success.  :)

I have no doubt there are some experienced canvassers out there.
What techniques should i adopt in order to aquire more business for him?

I know its a very open ended question... but if anyone has any tips ide be most grateful.
Thanks.
Tim.

hey tim

Well tim you dont need to be the best canvesser in the business to get work simply because if the customer you approach dont av a cleaner your 80% there,
Its best to be friendly and say somthing like,
Hi my names tim just calling to day to see if you require a window cleaner,  now befour they answer say cos am starting a window cleaning  around in this area from next monday would you require my service,
this puts the customer at ease cause they think other neighbours have allready aggreed to your service, and they feel that they are missing out plus they no if other people have the same cleaner as them that your trust worthey,
that what i have done in the past and had great suxsess with
hope it helps.
ps sorry about the spelling lol

I Canvassed for 5 hours solid yesterday and only got 4 custumers and 2 'maybes'  :(

Many said they already had a w/c.

I'm hitting another area tomorrow... I hope I get more success or i'll throw the towel in.

My pitch is "Hi/Good afternoon etc, my name is Paul and i'm currently expanding my w/c round in this area. Do you require a window cleaner? We are very competitive, especially with the current climate"

Most already had a w/c in the area I hit. A couple of people said they'd have me if i did all the facias as well etc as their current w/c charged extra...

I had to kindly say I didn't know any w/c that would do all that extra for free  ::) ..and I couldn't do it for free too  :P

Some sweet little old lady said her son does hers now as the last guy, "some polish fella" she said, charged her £10 a time just to do the front of her bungalow!!!!  :o (I should'a said i'd do it for £9  ;D

I'm hitting a big shopping centre tomorrow... i've already made the phone call...

Keep at it mate!

I would not say that I am more competitive than their window cleaner, because all you are going to get is customers who will go to the lowest price cleaner.

For the ones who say "will you clean the facias as well as the windows" your answer is "yes I can", you then quote the job up with the facias, or you clean them and charge for the 1st clean and just you just give them a quick spray down on the other cleaning dates without charging them.

As for knocking areas were there are already window cleaners working, I would carry on, because no window cleaner cleans every house.

I would also kept your sales pitch short and to the point, finshing with a question that requires an answer.

Something like this.

Hi I am YOUR local window cleaner.

Do you want a regular and reliable window cleaner?

I do say that I clean the sills and frames too in with the w/c, most said their w/c didn't bother. However, most said they "didn't want to upset the w/c by changing him.."  :-\  ...w/c must be run by the Mafia around where I live  8)

- Exactly!  ;D  I need to build...

..and I always knock EVERY house, no matter how many rejections...

I just say (whilst smiling) my name is x and I run my own local window cleaning business, and I'm just looking for some new customers in the area, would you be interested in having your windows cleaned on a regular basis?

When they say they already have a window cleaner, say that your happy they have one, and leave your card, saying "if you ever need anything, here's my card, you can always give me a call".

Never undercut anyone, and if they still ask for a quote, say that you don't want to upset their existing window cleaner, making sure first that they are not happy with their existing window cleaner. A lot of people appreciate that a lot actually. If they accept the quote I kindly ask to contact their window cleaner, and cancel his services.

I soon found out, that I can build up a much better round if I don't call on some houses, you get a feeling when you look at some houses that the owners aren't exactly your ideal customer.

Would you say you get a better response from door knocking rather than just posting flyers?

yep I put flyers in the letterbox then knock 1 or 2 days later. 30% hit rate, there is a really massive hard man (meeting him Monday) who just sticks visiting cards in doors and hopes. When other windies turn up he threatens them. He is doing really well ;D
Anyway, if I no longer post on here after Monday I will be "dead"  ???
But my point is, door knocking works best IMHO
