wfp and sash windows!?
« on: April 04, 2005, 06:51:21 pm »
Is it really a no no???

Come on you wfp pedallars! Convince me! Many have said i cant do sash windows, even the ones with good paint cos the water will get in. Is that really so!? What will you guys do in the summer when the customers are out and the upstairs windows are open and you cant push them completely shut with the pole? Will you flood them out or get your trusted ladder off the van??? ;D

Loads of my customers have some upstairs sash windows open a bit. No problems when up a ladder but what a mare with wfp.

don't know about the others....but I have not found a window yet that I cannot reach with a pole within reason...(and forget it with ladders)
Talking about sash windows....got a few of them too..if it's open...ask them to shut it...if they are not in to do so...leave it....bet it is next time !...still cleans the same...just be a bit more carefull , There still seems to be so much mystery over the Pro's and Con's of WFP...when it really is quite simple...the real change is in your heads.

You can clean sash windows very well with a wfp if you know how to use it correctly, But on sash windows i would say your be much faster with a ladder than a wfp, due to the way you need to clean them correctly.

I'm not sure on this one regards WFP's.

A short while back we picked up two jobs next to each other that had both previousy been done by WFP's several times.

The properties both had sash chord windows and both were massive Victorian town houses with - the one's that have 8 foot wide stair cases in them. £45 each ... lovely money £££££

The original w/c stopped calling so the owners phoned up someone in the yellow pages and a WFP company turned up. I know the business concerned and they are not newcomers to WFP's.

The complaint by both owner was that 'as much water ended up inside as outside'.

So far this year half our new work has been from customers who are unhappy with WFP.

I just now don't know what the truth is regards WFP's.

Use less water, Top sash open -turn pole upside down and push it shut. If you cannot, just clean the bit you can or leave till next time. Sash's dont cause me much probs really but I dont do frames and just clean the glass by pushing the clean water up to the top and side edge, and do this with oxidised alu frames as well. USE LESS WATER.

Suddenly there seems to be a great fuss about sash windows, god knows why, providing the paintwork hasn't oxidised they are no more difficult to clean than any other window.

With a first time clean I'll wash everything I can, top to bottom. But I will take care not to have my water pressure to high, otherwise it can end up going up into the gap between the upper and lower sash.
I'll do all the windows on whatever side of the house I'm working on, then go back to the first one.
This time I ignore most of the frames, you just have to be aware that the top sash slides UP into the frame, and that it does sit INSIDE the frame of the window, therefore you do not to the edges of the sash that disappear into the frame. For the obvious reason that water will go between the sash and the frame and draw out any grime that is hidden there.

The same for the lower sash.

As Jeff said, if the top sash is open, try reversing your pole and simply push it shut, if the lower one is open, LEAVE THE WINDOW ALONE! ;D

Quite how you get water inside I don't know ??? I have a lot of work that involves sash windows, the worst case of water getting in is just a few drbbly runs on the inside of a cracked pane of glass, but thats no different to using an applicator and squeegee, it happens then too.

Tatty paintwork isn't a problem really either, only oxidised paintwork.

If the paintwork has began to oxidise even mildly, then you won't do as good a job, but this fact applies to all types of window and not just sash ones.
Fortunately these are in the minority.

Would I get my ladders out to clean them? Not a chance, I'll give potential customers with oxidised paintwork the number of a trad guy instead, oxidised frames are a pain with trad too, let them have the hassle ;)

I only carry a ladder if I need it for access to a flat roof or somesuch, apart from my 6ft pointer, sometimes I need that for the inside of office windows.

well thanks guys that seems a bit more optomistic! I will have to wait and see. But there is no way i would give the number of someone else in the area im in. I do most there and wouldnt encourage any competition, if the paint is oxidised i would get the ladders out!

sometimes it pays to speak well of the 'opposition' ....(which it isn't really)...we're all in the same boat...by me (us) doing this...I've traded work and made loads of new mates....there will always be more windows than cleaners !.....there's plenty for all of us...and in any case, it makes it tighter...bit like a union...I'd love to see it where a bad customer can't get a cleaner...coz we all know each other !

dont get me wrong i didnt mean to sound off!

Im always the first to initiate conversation with other window cleaners and have many mates who are and often pass on work. But in this particular area where the old sash etc windows are it is a very tight community and ive been there 17 yrs cleaning for them and they all know me by name etc so just like to keep it sewn up without any hassle.

This area isnt like others i clean such as estates where i have had people cleaning next door and across the road and it doesnt really make any odds. Just have a quick chat and be on your way!
