Christmas tips already !!!
« on: March 23, 2005, 08:01:39 pm »
Anybody had their Christmas tip yet ?
A guy who I have never met asked to clean his windows and promptly pulled out 60 quid to pay for the next year up front ( 12 cleans)and then pulled out another tenner and said "thats for your Christmas"
Got me thinking , getting a bit fed up collecting , do you think people would go for paying up front like this guy .
Any other tips on how to get people to pay without collecting ?

your right .I f most of my customers paid up front i would have to open a few ISA`s , otherwise the money would be well spent.
one of my cutomers tonight suggested paying by standing order. Anybody have that arrangement ?

I had someone pay me 6 months in advance, its really nice when they pay you, but now i hate it as it feels i am cleaning them for FREE if you now what i mean only 2 more months before there money runs out :) . I will not do that again.

Windae;

Altho I can see the advantage; payment in advance vs being behind;I agree with Justin. :o

Psycologically, even tho it is not done for free; being paid ahead of time may not be as advantageous as being paid as the services are provided.

However; if I had to chose one extreme or the other; I would chose the advance. 8)

By the way, did you smell alcohol on that dude's breath? Just kidding; but that is unusual. ;D

I know after I have had 2 beers I am liable to  agree to things that I may regret.  Uh oh; I have secrets that could be revealed! :P

Good luck with your business!

Sorry guys but I have never heard to so rubbish in all my life.
You are running a business not working for beer vouchers.

If everyone paid upfront in advance by direct debit just imagine what your cash flow would be like and the uses you could put that money to.

Get them on direct debit and change your mind set.

Spring is here so go get those new customers and tell them how it is.

Cheers

i agree with George-Reid, if they want to pay upfront, let them

Afterall we all have bank accounts, so just put the money in the account and earn a few pence interest

I only have 1 customer who pays in advance, 6 cleans (which is about 8 months) its great :)

Because 90% of my customers pay at the time services are rendered; including commercial accounts; it is difficult to relate to collections, etc. :D

Doctors and dentists expect payment at the time of an office visit; why should anyone think window cleaners should wait? ???

I'll bet your customers pay when they buy their groceries and go to the doctor, and get their car fixed, etc. ;D

And having to go around to collect money on a weekly basis is infringing on your time off. ??? And time with your family. :-\

If it were me; I would begin today with making a clear point with customers that payment is due whether they are home or not.

Just because it has "always been that way" does not mean it is correct to  make window cleaners wait for their money. ???

If you want your pay policy to change; take  charge today; change your policy.

Look at it this way;  IT IS YOUR BUSINESS, YOUR PAY POLICY, YOU CALL THE SHOTS!

Just think how much time is spent on an annual basis collecting; (2 hours per week X 52 weeks = 104 hours per year; 4.33 days per year just collecting.

And a bit of frustration also; gas; wear and tear on your vehicle. ::)

To make window cleaners wait for their money or to make them come by later is not a fair policy to you.

Leave them several envelopes when the agreement is made. 8)

Either mail it on that day or leave the check in the envelope in a particular spot for pick up. 8)

Unless payment in advance is in cash; who is to say the check will be good 6 months from now.  ???

I used to pay some people in advance/postdated checks.

My accountant told me never to do that again. :o

Bad policy he told me. The ideal arrangement is paid at the time. ;D

But as you know, change will not happen on it's own. If you want pay arrangements to change; change them!

Otherwise you have no one to blame besideas yourself for not being paid as you wish. ;D

By the way; I do flirt sometimes in a freindly way. I look at you guys as co-workers and commrads. :-* :-*

But I am every bit as serious as all of you about the window cleaning proffession. 8)

Maybe more serious than many! :o

I'm splitting hairs here; but there's rules on which companies can and cannot use direct debits, because with a DD you can have control over a customers bank account.  For example you (the company) could increase the monthly payment from £10 per month to £100, without the customers agreement.  Or just make a one-off debit of £100.00.  (I think I'm correct in saying that).

Therefore, the company has to fulfill a certain criteria to be able to use them.

Standing Orders are different though.  It's a form from your customer, to their bank, instructing them to make a regular payment.

Look down in the 'documents to upload' section and have a look at Wavie Davies Standing Order form.

It's excellent and I'm using a numptyised version of it.

Hopefully I'll receive my first Standing Order payments (only 8 so far, but 8 less houses to go calling on) on the 1st of April!  Wahey!

Regards.

thanks tosh,
going to hopefully get most of my customers paying by standing order within the next two months.
its about time for things to change.
we should not be going round two or three times to collect our money.
i want now >:(

thanks for all the input on this. if a total stranger can pay for a year up front then i`m sure the regular ones who value my work will go along with my new payment terms.
positive thinking or what guys / gals ;D
