running your van for free
« on: December 31, 2008, 02:18:16 pm »
vegetableoildiesel.co.uk, very helpfull forum
its true run your van on filtered veg oil
brought my kit for 180 quid, very simple to fit, fitting approx 1 day
done all the research so know whats what any questions just ask
very important will only work on bosch diesel injector/pumps lucus will fail and cause damage to pump and head/block.

pro's no running costs just filters 2 quid off ebay near zero emmisions

cons, filtering oil just a bit messy do it in your garden shed, collection of oil you need a licience 140 quid for 3 years ive already collected 300 litres without one in 2 days, just talk to your local chinese, they have to pay for collection, you are only allowed to use 2500 lit per year and you are supposed to document this, blar blar blar!! whoes going to police this, your fumes will smell of veg oil.

once you have got you filtration process sorted its very simple all you need is a 200 l oil drum and filters link to it

visit http://www.dieselveg.com have a good look most information but kits expensive but good
brought mine from http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/products.html 180 quid

people have been using veg oil foy many years running cars vans lorries tractors boats ect

Its that easy eh ? no starting on diesel and changing over when the engines warm? No lumps of dim sum in the fat to filter out? no humping drums of messy oil in and out of the van and down the garden shed? no doubling of tanks and when the conversion goes wrong no going down the local garage who would have every idea of whats wrong. Not for me

Also, does is not have to run on a diesel/oil ratio? and in the winter months its something like 80% diesel/20%oil...bit of a faff on......plus by the sounds of it illegal too the way you're doing it!!! not how i like to run things but each to their own..

The engine needs a conversion to keep the veg oil warm so it don't thicken especially in cold weather.
It uses an electric element until coolant is warm enough to keep the vegoil warm.

I've looked into this from a fitters point of view an I won't do it.

It's true merc made his origonal engine to run on peanut oil, but his engine didn't have electrionic engine management systems that monitored temperatures and the emissions gases not to mention torque and mass air flow

Each to his own but be warned!

you are wrong, the engine does not need conversion.

veg oil is heated via yes electric element (not reccomended) or a simple head exchager like your car heater or raidiator then this heated oil goes into the pump/injectors via a 2 way switch, very simple.

dont understand your next statment, its very easy to fit any keen diyer can fit or at a fitting center.

cars vans trucks buses tractors commercial boats run on veg oil and have been since the 70s this is very big
many many thousands of people run on veg oil for many years no problems.

just a small selection from a kit supplier  there are also a huge long term study data base available run bu the end user!

So unless you have the electric element you cannot start on veg oil ?

sorry dont understand?

there are two ways to heat the oil before it enters the pump, electric basically a glow plug oil within a small box, not the best option.

A heat exchanger option is best, its like a heater matrix, heater in your car, it runs off the hot coolent most realiable, as a glow plug can fail.

best way is to combine both heat it up electricay, then when coolent temp comes up to temp an electric switches off the electric heater (glow plug)

Why are you advising us if you don't understand ? The oil passing through the pump dos'nt ignite unless its warm so thats why they start on diesel then change over once the plate exchanger is hot enough. Its not enough to heat the bit around the glow plug you need to heat the body of oil. You may find this chip fat thing works for you - I think you would be better off finding that little bit of well paid work and be just that little bit better off. I looked into this ages ago and prefer to spend the money on real diesel and get the money back from Gordon ;)

2 points, just my personall preference mind you, I dont wan get draged into this as its a cleaning forum

But,
 jonisondell,
So engine does need a conversion! A heat exchanger from the coolant system, like a water heater (for washing your hands) this drags heat from coolant water causing slow warm ups in winter. Even fitting an electric heater ELEMENT is a conversion? wiring, fuses, switches.
My point is you just can't bung veg oil straight in from a chip shop in winter it's too cold. New cheap veg oil can be put in basic diesels in warm weather, then mostly it needs to be mixed with derv colder the ambient temp the more derv you need.

BDCS I agree wiyh you, to much bother and I bet those useing it wont get their van repaired under any warranty! As I understand it it don't need a changeover like the old parrafin/petrol or gas/petrol engines did Thats what the electric ELEMENT heater is for, to help with the initial warm up from cold. Also if my vehicles ever won't start I can rule out any veggy oil related faults!!

So at the end of the day it aint really free is it?

I stand corrected

Just put my 1997 LDV in and if it was a 1991 model (earlier so no ECU etc) It would need an extra tank

I am a member of the LDV forum and this guy on there is a pro veg oil guy, but just look at the conversion his van needed

www.fruitloop.co.uk/van.php   The page has gone but follow the links on the right hand side

Here's Johns LDV site have a poke around http://www.ldv-sherpa.co.uk/portal.php?sid=7734548b374a05756c0131c4d77f1bdb
