Stands back in amazement

I read in todays Daily Mail that, just like us WFP'ers, the police won't climb ladders
While investigating a reported crime on a church, the police refused to climb a couple of short ladders to view the damage caused by vandals
Seems it was a case of, 'Health & safety mate, can't climb up there, might do ourselves a mischief.'
To quote from the Mail about another incident with the police and safety;
'In 2003, Lord Condon and Sir John Stevens, both former commissioners of the metropolitan Police, were taken to court for failing to ensure the 'health, safety and welfare of officers' after a constable fell through a roof while chasing two burglars.'

It was the Daily Express, (unless the Daily Mail ran the same story). 

It turned out okay in the end, quote, "But a photographer, whithout official ladder training bravely scaled the two sets of 12ft ladders and took photos of the damage to give to the police".

The paper also said: "A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said later: "Health and Safety Executive guidlines suggest that all surfaces should be presumed fragile in the first instance".

It was all to do with some vandalism (probably caused by Chavs) on a church roof.

The mail obviously ran the same story..........pathetic isn't it?............2 papers running the same story

It's a good job we have brave journalists who aren't afraid to scale a 12 foot ladder in pursuit of a story

A few years ago, a soldier in the Royal Signals, whose job it was, was to climb telegraph poles and fix communication lines.  Anyway, while carrying out his duties, he fell from a ladder and injured himself.

He was an experienced soldier and had spent years doing his job; ie climbing ladders.  However, in this day of litigation, he took the army to court and won a large compensation claim from the MOD.  His claim hinged round the point that he'd never received any form of ladder training!  Despite the fact he'd been doing it for years.

I guess employers are covering their backs.
